Chennai: Nights to get warmer for next few days, IMD forecasts

CHENNAI: Humid and moisture-laden winds from the sea moving over the land may make days warm and nights warmer in the city for the next few days.

While IMD has forecast dry weather to prevail over the city with day temperatures to touch 32°C for the next two days, private forecasters said above normal temperatures may last at least till Friday.

For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast mist/haze to prevail during early morning hours in the city and the suburbs. While skies may be partly cloudy, day temperatures may touch a maximum 32°C and night temperatures may be around 22°C.

A meteorologist said the slightly above normal temperatures are due to the steady flow of easterly winds over the land. It is supported by an anti-cyclone, a circulation of winds in the clockwise direction, over Odisha and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal. “The cold and dry northerly winds are cut off and only the easterlies are largely prevailing. So, minimum temperatures may be slightly above normal. Day temperatures too may rise by a degree but it may not be that hot,” the official said.

Cloudy skies, while may keep day temperatures under check, could make nights warmer as they trap the heat in the land. On Monday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 31.1°C and 31°C during the day, which are 0.6°C and 0.3°C above normal. Earlier before sunrise, temperatures touched 21.9°C and 21.6°C in the two stations, which were 0.1°C and 0.2°C above normal. “We can expect above normal temperatures in the city at least for the next three to four days,” said Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather.
