Chennai: Court sentences man, his mother to 10 years jail for abetting suicide

CHENNAI: A 60-year-old woman and her son were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a mahila court in Chennai for abetting her daughter-in-law's suicide at Otteri.

J Velayutham, 28, a resident of Bashiyam Street in Otteri, and his mother J Babyammal, 60, were moved to convicted prisoners block in Puzhal prison after the sentencing.

Police said Velayutham had married Parimala Gandhi, 22, in 2013. The couple lived at the house along with his parents. Police said Velayutham and his mother often harassed Parimala demanding she get more money as dowry from her parents. After continued harassment and a specific altercation on September 6, 2014, she died by suicide.

Based on her parents' complaint, the Otteri police registered a case of unnatural death and began investigation which revealed the case of dowry harassment. Velayutham and Babyammal were then booked for abetting suicide.Hearing the case this week, the mahila court judge Rajalakshmi sentence the two to 10 years imprisonment with a fine of 15,000 each.
