CHENNAI: A city metropolitan magistrate court imposed a fine of Rs 70,000 on an Uttarkhand-based pharmaceutical company for violating provisions of the Drug and Cosmetics Act. During inspection of a city godown, a drug inspector found that the cough syrup manufactured by the firm was not of standard quality.
According to the prosecution, the drug inspector, George Town range, conducted a surprise check at a godown in Kondithope on November 29, 2018, and had drawn a sample of the cough syrup manufactured by Progressive Life Sciences Pvt Ltd.
The drug inspector sent the sample for chemical analysis and results showed that the medicine was not of standard quality.
“In the analysis report, it was found that the cough syrup contained only 3.2mg of phenylephrine hydrochloride instead of 5mg,” the prosecution noted. In a showcause notice issued to the managing director of the firm, a submission was made that due to improper storage facility, the contents of the drugs were not within limits.
Not satisfied with the response, the official moved the court after which the management pleaded guilty.
XV Metropolitan magistrate, George Town, A Muralikrishna Anandan after perusing the submissions noted that it is not the case of the prosecution that there was any injury or harm caused to public and since the firm too had not any recorded case of previous violations, the magistrate ordered a total fine ofRs 70,000 be paid by the management.
