Chemotherapy resumes for cancer patients at Nottingham hospitals after staff shortages

Cancer patients who were left unable to receive treatment at Nottingham hospitals have now had their chemotherapy resumed.

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) confirmed that everyone who had their chemotherapy stalled last month is now able to receive treatment once again.

Dr Simon Roe, clinical director for cancer and associated services at the trust, said that all affected patients had been contacted directly "to explain that their treatment will resume".

NUH, which operates the service at Nottingham City Hospital and Kings Mill Hospital, was last month unable to run a full chemotherapy service due to staff shortages.

The trust, which also runs Queen's Medical Centre, paused treatment for palliative patients, for whom chemotherapy is primarily used to manage their symptoms.

Dr Roe said: “We have now restarted chemotherapy for all patients who had their treatment paused in September. We have contacted these patients directly to explain that their treatment will resume.

“We are also in the process of starting treatment for new patients who were unable to start treatment last month”.

Annie Walton, centre head at Maggie's, a cancer support charity based at Nottingham City Hospital, said that those affected by the stoppage had not been affected for long.

She added: "NUH have been very supportive throughout the whole process and have kept in contact. They have been very good at informing us on what has been happening.

"I think that level of communication is important for what we do."
