Chemical incident sparks emergency response

Firefighters had to be called to a home in Frampton Cotterell after carpet cleaning products sparked a chemical incident.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called at 4.04pm on June 1 to reports of a chemical incident. It was caused by an 'overuse' of carpet cleaning products.

Crews from Yate and Patchway fire stations attended the scene, where firefighters used breathing apparatus and specialised tools to rip out the carpet completely.

A high-pressure hose reel also had to be used in order to decontaminate the affected area.

In a tweet, a spokesperson from Yate Fire Station said: "Please be careful when using household chemicals!

"Everyone escaped without harm today."

Pictures from the scene show firefighters in breathing apparatus washing their hands under a hose following the incident.

South Western Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

It's not the first time incidents involving cleaning chemicals have necessitated an emergency response, and Avon Fire and Rescue have been vocal in the past about avoiding the mixing of household products and promoting careful use of toxic substances.

In December 2018 a mum spoke out after accidentally creating a huge gas cloud of chlorine whilst trying to unblock her toilet, which lead to three fire engines being called to her Nailsea flat and the street being cordoned off.
