Chemical incident at comprehensive school saw team in full body breathing suits arrive

A chemical incident resulted in people in full body breathing suits arriving at a Carmarthenshire school.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to Glan y Mor Comprehensive School in Burry Port, on Thursday, March 25, following reports of a chemical incident.

A post on social media from crews at Llanelli fire station detailed that the secondary school was "evacuated" as a result but confirmed that there were "no injuries" involved. The post went on to say that crews wore "gas tight suits" and used breathing apparatus "as a precaution". The post has since been removed, however.

A statement released today said the incident involved a corroded bottle that was kept within a locked storage room at the school. Fire crews were at the school for just over three hours.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 1.13pm on Thursday, March 25, joint fire control received a call of an incident, involving a corroded bottle that was stored within a locked storage room at a school in Burry Port.

"Crews from Llanelli and Tumble were mobilised to the incident.

"Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service also mobilised an environmental unit to the incident and ensured that the scene was safe before handing the incident over to the school at 4.18pm."
