However there could have been a different outcome had rival Oscar Elite not made a mistake and fallen with only a couple of fences to go.
Jockey Brendan Powell had made a promising move on the inside of Threeunderthrufive (11-4) but unfortunately crashed through the obstacle.
That left Threeunderthrufive to see off 2-1 favourite Does He Know in the home straight, reversing their Chepstow October form.
The two other runners, Undersupervision and Streets Of Doyen, did not complete the course.
Nicholls went on to record a treble with Yala Enki and Timeforatune, while Dan and Harry Skelton celebrated a double.
