Cheltenham New Year's Day horse racing fixture is abandoned as ground is too wet

Cheltenham's New Year's Day horse racing fixture has been called off as the ground is too wet.

Officials inspected the track on Wednesday morning, after heavy rain in the past week caused waterlogged areas.

With snow not helping matters either and the prospect of more unsettled weather on the way, clerk of the course Simon Claisse made an early decision to abandon.

The card was due to stage a pair of Grade 2 contests, the Dipper Novices' Chase sponsored by Paddy Power and the Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle.

It also included the grand finale of the bookmaker's Millionaire Chase competition.

A tweet from Cheltenham Racecourse read: "New Year's Day Racing abandoned.

"Following 85mm of rainfall since last Wednesday, there are areas of waterlogged ground across the width of the course and it is therefore not raceable."

Chepstow's Coral Welsh National card on December 27 was another high-profile meeting which lost its battle with the weather, however it has been rescheduled for January 9.

Wednesday meeting's at Haydock was cancelled after 100mm of snow, while heavy rain ended hopes of Uttoxeter, Leicester and Fontwell going ahead in recent days.

And earlier this month, the all-weather action at Chelmsford had to be halted due to fog limiting visibility.
