Cheltenham man arrested in connection with theft of golden toilet from Blenheim Palace

A Cheltenham man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a solid gold toilet from Blenheim Palace.

The "high-value" toilet, worth a huge £4.8m, was one of the items taken during a burglary at the stately home in Oxfordshire on Saturday (September 14).

The artwork had been part of an exhibition by Maurizio Cattelan, reports Gloucestershire Live .

Thames Valley Police arrested a 36-year-old man from Cheltenham on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle and he has since been released under investigation.

Investigating officer, Detective Inspector Steven Jones, said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident and have made a second arrest in connection with it.

“Our priority is to locate the stolen item, and I would urge anyone with any information to contact police by calling 101."

A 66-year-old man was previously arrested on the same day as the theft and was held on suspicion of burglary before he was released on bail until October.

Blenheim's chief executive Dominic Hare said the theft had echoes of a "heist movie" and added it was the "first theft of this type in living memory" from the palace.

Mr Hare said the World Heritage Site had a "a sophisticated security system", but said staff were "now challenged to look hard at ourselves and improve again".
