Cheltenham Festival pointers we learned from the weekend's racing action

Jump racing fans were treated to a feast of top quality action last weekend with Cheltenham Festival pointers aplenty.

Gordon Elliott enjoyed a fine couple of days and it is his novices who are dominating the ante-post markets.

We tried to find you some value though for your Cheltenham portfolio after some eyecatching performances:

Cilaos Emery the dark horse - 11/1 for the Champion Chase

The 2020 Champion Chase may well been one of the best in a long time if reigning champion Altior takes on Willie Mullins' exciting Chacun Pour Soi.

But it could also well be the case that neither runs in the Wednesday showpiece, opening the door for Cilaos Emery.

Altior is the best horse in training over jumps, but Nicky Henderson has already signalled his intention to step his horse up in trip this season.

A tilt at the King George VI Chase looks likely at Christmas and were Altior to win that, then surely they wouldn't be able to resist running in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Chacun Pour Soi has looked freakishly good in two appearances on Irish racecourses, most notable when easily seeing off Defi Du Seuil at the Punchestown Festival.

But the son of Policy Maker has been a tricky horse to get right and it is no guarantee that the current ante-post favourite will be a runner come March.

The same could be said about the equally injury-prone Cilaos Emery, but he is priced a lot more attractively.

A classy hurdler, he was impressive in easily beating much more experienced opposition in Poplar Square Chase at Naas on Saturday and looks like a dark horse for the Champion Chase.

Follow the money with Tower Bridge

A hot beginners chase was won by Mullins' Tornado Flyer at Naas despite making a serious jumping error down the back straight.

The one that caught our eye though was Joseph O'Brien's Tower Bridge who kept on well to finish a never threatening fourth.

Owned by JP McManus, he came second in this year's Close Brothers Novices´ Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, some sixteen lengths behind the very-well handicapped A Plus Tard.

You can be sure that he will be campaigned at winning one of the big staying handicap this season, most likely at Cheltenham, so watch out if the money starts to come for the McManus horse.

Abacadabras could be magic - 14/1 for the Supreme Novices

Gordon Elliott looks like he has an embarrassment of riches in the novice ranks this season.

But we thought there would be a bigger reaction from the bookies to Abacadabras' win at Navan.

There were some decent yardsticks in the lineup and the second horse Latest Exhibition looks like one to follow too.

But Abacadabras travelled and jumped immensely and this classy bumper horse looks made for hurdles.

He is likely to run in the Royal Bond at Fairyhouse next, so it may be worth getting on the 14/1 for the Supreme Novices Hurdle sooner rather than later.

Keep on A Plus Tard's side - 20/1 for the Ryanair Chase

The money came late for A Plus Tard in the Fortria Chase on Sunday.

He ended up beaten in second place but lost little in defeat behind Ballyoisin who jumped superbly from the front and is bit of a course specialist.

Two miles looks a touch short for Henry De Bromhead's gelding and the 20/1 about for the Ryanair Chase looks great value for a horse who was one of the most impressive winners at the 2019 festival.
