Cheltenham Festival loses two sponsors as Covid-19 costs estimated at £90m

Cheltenham Festival has lost two of its race sponsors as the economic effect of Covid-19 has had further repercussions on the sport.

Cheltenham Racecourse owners, the Jockey Club, have already estimated the pandemic will cost them in the region of £90million.

And ahead of a return to racing at the course on Friday, it has suffered a further blow with the RSA Insurance Novices Chase searching for a new title for the first time since 1974.

In addition, Racing Post is withdrawing its backing for the Arkle Novices’ Chase at the March meeting.

Ian Renton, Jockey Club regional director for Cheltenham, told the Daily Mail: “It is understandable that a number of businesses are reassessing their future marketing and hospitality commitments in the current climate.

"Although we are saddened to lose any longstanding partner, this is a fantastic opportunity to become involved with a Grade One Novice Chase at the Festival.”
