Cheltenham Festival 2020 cancellation fears from fans as case confirmed in the town

A case of coronavirus was confirmed in Cheltenham just hours before the start of The Festival, but it is not expected to affect the meeting.

The four-day fixture is set to begin with Champion Day on Tuesday, as the crowds the asked to adhere to a raft of hygiene measures .

The latest case of coronavirus, the third in Gloucestershire, was diagnosed over the weekend.

Horses had already started arriving at the course by the time the news was made public, as racing fans became concerned there might be a last minute change of plan.

But a Cheltenham Racecourse spokesman said: “British Racing has been in close communication with the Government.

"We welcome the guidance that the business of the country should continue as usual at this time, while ensuring we adhere to the latest public health advice in full.”

Meanwhile Dr Bharat Pankhania from the University of Exeter has advised those over 60 and with underlying health issues to consider whether they need to attend the major sporting event.

He told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: “We have a rapidly evolving situation, therefore we have to be dynamic in our decisions meaning that a decision we made two or three weeks ago needs to be reviewed.

“And we need to be brave and change it if need be.

“I understand the Festival is going ahead. My advice is, look the virus is in free circulation in the community, therefore the at risk groups ought to take care.

“Who are these at risk groups? I would say anyone with an underlying medical condition as well as people over 60. They seem to have more of the illnesses than the other population.

He added: "Please, if you fall into a certain age group or have underlying health issues – review your decision to go [to Cheltenham Festival ]."

Earlier Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said that events such as the prestigious meeting should go ahead as planned.

"There’s no reason why people should not be going to those sort of events," he stated.
