Cheltenham: David Maxwell reveals shout from fellow jockey inspired Dolphin Square win

Wise words from a fellow jockey helped inspire David Maxwell's Cheltenham win on Dolphin Square.

The amateur jockey timed his run to perfection on the 28-1 shot, who battled past Kansas City Chief by a length-and-a-quarter.

Maxwell, heavily criticised on social media for another ride earlier this week, raced in mid-pack aboard the outsider.

His mount was alongside Whatsupwithyou as the runners headed down the back straight.

Maxwell and the rival horse's jockey, Kielan Woods, moved their horses wide as they came down the hill in the Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle.

From there Dolphin Square stayed on resolutely under Maxwell's urgings and collared the leader up the famous run-in.

"I think Kielan Woods shouted to me at the top of the hill 'Er Dave just keep out there a bit, find a bit of nice ground we may fill these up yet!" Maxwell told Racing TV.

"I thought this (Dolphin Square) may well will up. And he's a tough little battler as well so I knew if I got him into a head-to-head he probably wouldn't go down without a fight."

Maxwell, who rides the majority of horses he owns, punched the air in delight and received a pat on the back from his weighing room colleague Ben Jones.

The performance came just days after some punters were left frustrated by his second place on Cat Tiger at Doncaster.

Accepting Wednesday's contest was a "complete mess up", Maxwell was especially happy to make amends at the home of jump racing.

Property investor Maxwell said the other riders help spur him on, in a sport which is his hobby.

"They're a lovely bunch in the weighing room," he said.

"They're very accepting of an idiotic middle-aged man in their midst against a bunch of twenty-something pros!"

Maxwell originally had not planned to be competing at Cheltenham at the first opportunity in 2022.

He needed little persuasion when Dolphin Square's trainer Philip Hobbs spied the race.

"That's what you do in business as well you choose the right people and you let them get on with the job," Maxwell added.
