Chelsea XI vs Sheffield United confirmed: Mateo Kovacic returns as Tammy Abraham leads attack

Frank Lampard has made one change from the team that won 3-0 against Rennes in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, with Mateo Kovacic coming in for Jorginho.

The defence and front three remain the same, with N'Golo Kante dropping into a deeper midfield role and the Croatian occupying the more attacking role with Mason Mount.

Tammy Abraham gets another chance to impress as the centre forward with Timo Werner continuing on the left in the absence of the injured Christian Pulisic.

Speaking before the game, Lampard indicated that a 4-3-3 system was now the preferred option following the success of the past fortnight.

"For the last few games, I think it is yes," he said. "We played it a lot last year but when we had the change in personnel in the summer and some of the players came in with a versatility in the way they play.

"Some of the things that we would normally work at in pre-season, we had to work at in real time so we had a slight change in formation with the 4-3-3 which has worked well recently.

"I think it does give a good balance to our team so there's a system where you always want to pick the right one but the players have to adjust as well.

"You need intelligent players to take information on board. We have that so we need to just keep working on it and be flexible where we need to be at times."

Kick-off at Stamford Bridge is at 5:30pm.

Chelsea team vs Sheffield United: Edouard Mendy; Reece James, Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, Ben Chilwell; Mateo Kovacic, N'Golo Kante, Mason Mount; Hakim Ziyech, Tammy Abraham, Timo Werner.
