Chelsea XI vs Bayern Munich confirmed: Frank Lampard names unchanged team as Giroud starts

Frank Lampard has stuck with the same starting XI that performed so well against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon for tonight's Champions League round of 16 first leg tie against Bayern Munich, although Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a surprise omission with young Scottish midfielder Billy Gilmour named in his stead on the bench.

Tammy Abraham is again a substitute with Olivier Giroud tasked with leading the line against the Bundesliga leaders.

Willy Caballero continues in goal with a back three of Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Toni Rudiger. Reece James and Marcos Alonso will play at wing back with Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho in central midfield.

Ross Barkley continues instead of Willian, while Mason Mount also starts in an attacking midfield role.

Bayern head coach Hansi Flick has brought Thomas Muller, Benjamin Pavard and Jerome Boateng in to his starting XI from the side that required a late winner from Robert Lewandowski to see off Paderborn last Friday evening. Philippe Coutinho is dropped to the bench.

Lampard said on the eve of this game that Loftus-Cheek would be part of the squad but it is unclear whether he has suffered an injury setback in the past 24 hours.

Chelsea: Willy Caballero; Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Toni Rudiger; Reece James, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, Marcos Alonso; Ross Barkley, Mason Mount; Olivier Giroud.

Substitutes: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Tammy Abraham, Willian, Pedro Rodriguez, Kurt Zouma, Emerson Palmieri, Billy Gilmour.
