Chelsea XI vs Arsenal confirmed: Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount start, Pulisic not in squad

Mateo Kovacic has returned to the Chelsea line-up for Jorginho having served a one-match suspension in the 2-0 defeat at home to Southampton on Boxing Day as Frank Lampard opts for a back three once again away to Arsenal.

Mason Mount also comes in for Callum Hudson-Odoi as the head coach makes two changes from the shock defeat to Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

The only difference to the side that won 2-0 away to Spurs last Sunday is Emerson coming in for Marcos Alonso, who has failed to recover from injury.

Christian Pulisic, who picked up a minor hamstring injury in training after the Southampton game, and Olivier Giroud, who is expected to leave the club next month, are not part of the matchday 18. Teenager Tariq Lamptey has been called up from the development squad.

This is Mikel Arteta's first home game in charge of Arsenal. Speaking before the game, Lampard said that Arteta will benefit from having an existing knowledge of the club in the early stages of his tenure but he should not expect the honeymoon period to last.

"I'm not sure, if you look at it across the board, if it helps [to have insight into a club already] but I certainly found it helps knowing some faces behind the scenes, knowing the values of the club and what the standards are and what the wants are," Lampard said.

"That can help at the start, the early stages. After that it levels out and your work is your work."
