Chelsea Women suffer shock WSL defeat against Reading as Arsenal stay top

Chelsea Women missed the chance to move above Arsenal at the top of the WSL as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Reading on Saturday.

Deanne Rose scored the winner after four minutes as Reading recorded the upset of the season on a disappointing afternoon for Chelsea at the Madejski Stadium.

After beating Arsenal in the FA Cup Final last weekend, Emma Hayes’ side had a chance to climb above the Gunners ahead of their game against Leicester on Sunday.

Chelsea had 31 attempts on goal and 77 per cent possession but they could not find an equaliser as Reading held on to secure their first ever WSL win against the Blues.

It was the first time in 60 WSL matches that Chelsea failed to score.

Chelsea manager Hayes said: “You cannot win every game of football. I am disappointed but well done to Reading, they worked their socks off and made it difficult for us.

“When you play three games in six games, I think that showed today. Even though we made changes we were not good enough. I thought we looked tired, even with the dominance. We just have to move forward. There is still a long way to go.”

Arsenal stay one point above Chelsea the top as the two London rivals go head-to-head in what is shaping up to be an enthralling title race this season.
