Chelsea warned about potential problem ahead of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner arrivals

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has warned Chelsea over the signing of Timo Werner.

The Blues are expected to tie up a deal for the RB Leipzig striker this summer with progress being made over a reported £53m deal.

But Shearer has warned Werner will expect Champions League football, suggesting Frank Lampard and his men must now get the job done once the season returns.

The Blues are currently fourth, five points behind Leicester City in third and three ahead of Manchester United in fifth.

"Signing Timo Werner is a huge statement from Chelsea - but it would be a kick in the teeth not to make the top four now," Shearer wrote in The Sun.

"Along with Hakim Ziyech, they have got two big-hitters through the door before the transfer window has opened.

"I am certain there will be more to come, too, with Ben Chilwell also on their radar.

"But these players will all be expecting to play in the Champions League next season, so it’s imperative they get the job done.

"With a three-point cushion in fourth it would be a real anti-climax if they didn’t, considering the talent on the way in."

Werner has scored 75 goals in 123 league appearances for Leipzig.

He has 31 goals so far this season, including four in eight appearances in the Champions League.
