Chelsea vs Liverpool rules on penalties, extra time and fourth sub in FA Cup

Liverpool are back in action this evening against Chelsea in the FA Cup, as they seek to return to winning ways after being beaten by Watford at the weekend.

The Reds saw their 44-game unbeaten run come to an abrupt end at the hands of Nigel Pearson’s side on Saturday evening, with the Hornets scoring three times without reply in the second half.

But tonight they turn their attention to the FA Cup as they look to build on victories against Everton and Shrewsbury Town in the competition so far this season.

And below is everything fans need to know about the new rules that kick in at this stage of the competition.

Does Chelsea vs Liverpool got to extra time and penalties?

Liverpool could face extra time if the score is level after 90 minutes, which would see another half an hour of football played at Stamford Bridge.

Replays are not played from the fifth-round onwards, which means that the Reds will have to do the job in the capital and do not have the option of a second match at Anfield.

If the score is still level after 120 minutes, then the tie will go to a penalty shootout.

The FA Cup rules state: "When a replayed match is drawn after 90 minutes, an extra 30 minutes shall be played, and 15 minutes shall be played in each half.

"If the score is still level at the end of extra time, the winner shall be determined by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with the procedure adopted by the International Football Association Board."

Can a fourth substitute be used?

If the match progresses into extra time, Liverpool will be allowed to make a fourth substitution in the additional 30 minutes that are played.

The rules state: "In the event that extra time is played in any match a Club may at its discretion use one additional substitute player, (a fourth in total) from the nominated seven substitutes, during such period of extra time."
