Chelsea vs Flamengo LIVE: Result and reaction as Flamengo come from behind to win and Jackson sent off after just four minutes on pitch

Chelsea suffered a damaging defeat to Flamengo in their second match of the Club World Cup group stages, having led until the 62nd minute before rapidly imploding.

Enzo Maresca’s side opened the competition with a 2-0 win over LAFC earlier this week but could not replicate that today in Philadelphia.

Instead it was the Brazilian side who took the spoils, coming from behind to score twice in a chaotic six minute spell after Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead inside the first 15 minutes.

Flamengo substitute Bruno Henrique scored a tap-in to equalise and minutes later turned provider as Danilo put the ‘home’ side in front, roared on by a vocal contingent of travelling fans.

Another substitute, this time Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, was then sent off a mere four minutes after coming on for stamping on Ayrton Lucas’ shin, and the remarkable turnaround was complete as another sub, 20-year-old Wallace Yan, scored his first goal for the side inside the final 10 minutes of normal time.

'It was a red card' - Maresca

21:40 , Flo Clifford

Short and to the point from the Chelsea boss, who tells DAZN: “What do I think? It was a red card, nothing to say.”

He has not spoken to Jackson yet, he added.

'We found the spots that could hurt them' - Jorginho

21:34 , Flo Clifford

Former Chelsea man Jorginho tells DAZN, “I think it says it all. For the game and how it was, we played good football and did really well on the pitch. When we had to wait, we waited. When we had to press, we put them in trouble. We worked a lot on how we could hurt them, we believe in what we do and we push all together.

We were really confident and we know in these big games the details make the difference. Overall we were really good in the first half so we said, ‘let's keep pushing’ [at half-time].

“We pushed in the first half and it worked so we knew we needed to do more in the second half and that is what we did. We found the little spots that could hurt them.”

Asked what those vulnerabilities were, he jokes, “Secret!” But doesn’t elaborate.

Elsewhere, Benfica battered Auckland City 6-0 in Group C and that means the New Zealand part-timers are out of the tournament.

'Stupid, stupid, stupid' - reaction to red card

21:24 , Flo Clifford

Former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel on DAZN has some strong words on that red card: “It was unbelievable from Nicolas Jackson. Stupid, stupid, stupid mistake. I don't know what was going through his head.

“You come into the game and you are 2-1 down. Your team needs you and you let them down.

“He did it in an important Premier League game at Newcastle when they were fighting for the Champions League places, and he has done it again.”

'Bruno Henrique is special' - Filipe Luis

21:15 , Flo Clifford

South American sides are unbeaten in this Club World Cup so far and you can tell it meant a lot to Flamengo - and their very appreciative travelling fans.

“I'm really happy,” Filipe Luis says on DAZN. “We believed that we would have chances and I am really proud. Bruno [Henrique] is special. It doesn't matter if he plays one minute or 90, he always gives his heart.”

FULL TIME: Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

21:03 , Flo Clifford

34-year-old Henrique and 33-year-old Danilo scored Flamengo’s first two and it was youngster Wallace Yan who put the icing on the cake.

Hugs and smiles all round as the players celebrate with Filipe Luis. A great second half by them and a distinctly poor one from Chelsea.

FULL TIME: Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

21:02 , Flo Clifford

90+7 mins: Chelsea try to build an attack but Jorginho is there to shepherd them away from the box... and the final whistle goes!

Flamengo take home all three points!

Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

21:01 , Flo Clifford

90+6 mins: Wallace goes driving down the left but eventually loses possession under pressure from Gusto.

Flamengo manager Filipe Luis, who has made some inspired substitutions, is still shouting instructions at his men.

Chalobah and Colwill are roundly booed by the hordes of Flamengo fans as they count down the seconds.

Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

20:59 , Flo Clifford

90+5 mins: Gusto tries to chip the ball past a defender on the right side of the box - but it clatters off his shin.

Chelsea have a host of players in the box but Flamengo are there.

Sanchez comes almost out to the centre line, for some reason?! Everyone in a Chelsea shirt has lost their head. Get back in your box, man.

Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

20:58 , Flo Clifford

90+4 mins: Plata was given a yellow then for taking his time leaving the pitch.

Madueke goes flying in the penalty area but he’s simply carrying too much momentum, no chance of a card or penalty there.

Substitute and goalscorer Bruno Henrique is designated the Superior Player of the Match, an inferior way of saying Man of the Match.

He then immediately fouls Cucurella and that looked a bit touch and go... the ref keeps his cards in his pocket.

Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

20:56 , Flo Clifford

90+2 mins: More subs for Flamengo. Araujo and Plata, who registered an assist, come off for Pedro and Michael. Araujo in particular is all smiles as he hugs his teammates and heads to the bench.

Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

20:55 , Flo Clifford

90 mins: Gusto takes it very short to Neto, who takes a touch and launches it goalwards - but it ricochets down past Guiu and Rossi gets there to send it behind, punching the air.

SEVEN minutes added on. Enough time for a late twist?

Rossi collects the corner with ease.

Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

20:53 , Flo Clifford

89 mins: Ooh, Sanchez comes way off his line to make a clearance and is very lucky that Lavia gets there to do it for him.

Gusto is harried by two defenders at the sideline and just about keeps the ball in play. Chelsea have a spell of possession.

Pulgar is lucky not to get a second caution for pulling back Caicedo. He does however concede another free kick.

Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

20:50 , Flo Clifford

87 mins: Caicedo is sent tumbling by Pulgar, who goes straight into the book.

As a result Chelsea get a free-kick right in the centre, about 30 yards out. Madueke and Chalobah stand over it... the ref gives the wall, and Cucurella, a talking-to for some argy-bargy.

Madueke sends it over the wall, and over the bar. Directionless. Poor.

GOAL! Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

20:48 , Flo Clifford

83 mins: Rough and ready, but Flamengo have a third!

The substitutes run on to celebrate and it’s another sub who created the moment of magic, Wallace, who’s been on the pitch about 30 seconds!

The 20-year-old scores his first goal for Flamengo, playing a one-two with Plata in the box, running back onto Plata’s ball to poke it beyond some hapless Chelsea defenders. He’s got all the time in the world in the end. What a moment for the youngster.

Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:46 , Flo Clifford

82 mins: Substitutions for both sides now: Gerson and Wesley are replaced by Wallace and Varela. Palmer and Fernandez come off for Guiu and Madueke.

Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:45 , Flo Clifford

81 mins: Wesley has some attention paid to his hamstring as he’s down on the pitch. The medical staff come on and Chelsea aren’t happy at what they see as time-wasting. The clock is ticking into the final ten minutes in Philadelphia.

Palmer takes a free-kick, it curls out to Fernandez at the far post, but his header flicks onto the roof of the net.

Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:42 , Flo Clifford

78 mins: Gerson goes for a curling strike but it curls a bit too much and into the path of Sanchez, who gets the clearance.

Maresca has his head in his hands as one of his players sends ex-Chelsea man Jorginho tumbling into a pile of water bottles on the sideline.

Araujo plays it forward for Gerson in the box but it goes bobbling towards Sanchez and runs out of steam.

Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:38 , Flo Clifford

74 mins: Gerson gets a yellow for a late challenge on Cucurella.

Another cooling break comes at the right time for Chelsea, you’d have to say. A penny for Enzo Maresca’s thoughts...

So far this has been a tale of two substitutes: Henrique the magic man for Flamengo, Jackson a horror show for Chelsea.

Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:36 , Flo Clifford

72 mins: Right. Now breathe.

Chelsea try to inject some pace back in and attack, Palmer struggles to turn the ball around in the box, and the move is snuffed out.

RED CARD! Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:33 , Flo Clifford

69 mins: Scenes!! Amidst all that madness, James and Delap came off for Lavia and Jackson - and now Jackson is shown a straight red for stamping on Lucas’ foot, just five minutes after coming on.

It’s a dreadful, reckless, unnecessary challenge and the ref knows what to do immediately.

GOAL! Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:30 , Flo Clifford

65 mins: Flamengo have turned it around!

In the space of a few minutes the momentum has completely swung. Flamengo have been poor from set-pieces but the corner falls to Henrique, who heads it down into the path of Danilo’s outstretched foot - and he gets a toe to it at the far post!

The substitutes sprint onto the pitch to celebrate. There’s a party in the stands.

GOAL! Flamengo 1-1 Chelsea

20:27 , Flo Clifford

62 mins: But Flamengo grab one back!

It’s the substitute Henrique who makes the difference, a fabulous deep ball is floated in by Gerson to Plata at the far post, who heads it down. It goes bobbling past Sanchez across the front of goal and Henrique is there at the post to tap in!

The travelling support go absolutely nuts.

CHANCE! Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:25 , Flo Clifford

61 mins: Palmer goes down clutching his knee as two Flamengo shirts target him, and the Chelsea man gets caught in an uncomfortable sandwich. Ouch.

Now Flamengo have an incredible chance! Plata and Henrique play a lovely disguised one-two before laying off to Araujo; he takes a touch in the centre of the box and Sanchez tips it over the bar! Right in front of the travelling Flamengo support.

The resulting corner is poor and Chelsea clear with ease.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:20 , Flo Clifford

57 mins: Sanchez is down on the ground after that, there’s a break in play... Jorgenson is getting ready on the sidelines but the keeper is back on his feet.

De Arrascaeta comes off for Henrique.

Warning signs for Flamengo as Chelsea take a corner quickly, Delap is rushing towards goal with Rossi way off his line, but Perreira sends it spinning out!

CLOSE! Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:18

54 mins: What are Flamengo doing?! Gerson breaks away, takes a touch and strikes across the face of goal - but it deflects off Chalobah and Plata, diving at it with the outside of his left foot, slams it into the side netting!

Huge, huge chance.

CHANCE! Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:14 , Flo Clifford

50 mins: Delap crosses in for Palmer but a defender is quickly onto him and snuffs the move out.

Lucas treads on Gusto and the referee doesn’t like that. Free kick to Chelsea, about 25 yards out, on the left. It’s a good position - but Cucurella glances James’ delivery down, and there’s no-one there to latch onto the ball!

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:11 , Flo Clifford

47 mins: Palmer turns the ball straight onto Jorginho’s head. Ouch. He gives him a little pat to say sorry.

Gerson hits the deck as his duel with Cucurella continues. That feistiness of the first half hasn’t gone anywhere.

Pedro Neto advances down the left, one on one with Danilo, and crosses in looking for a teammate, but no luck.

SECOND HALF: Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:09 , Flo Clifford

A little bit late, we’re underway in this second half. Chelsea took their time coming out.

HALF-TIME: Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:51 , Flo Clifford

That’s the end of an often frenetic, although not the highest quality, half. Chelsea lead at the break courtesy of some dismal Flamengo defending and a good run by Pedro Neto.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:50

45+3 mins: Pereira sends a tame header straight at Sanchez, who again takes his sweet time letting go of the ball.

Flamengo build again, Araujo lays it off for de Arrascaeta. He cuts it back at the byline but Cucurella charges to it ahead of Plata.

Flamengo have a corner, it travels out to Wesley, who thinks why not, have a go... it almost looks like it will bobble in, but Sanchez gets there.

PENALTY APPEAL! Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:47

45 mins: Gerson pulls Fernandez’s shirt and there’s a brief check for a penalty as Chelsea claim contact carried on into the area... no dice. Fernandez isn’t happy.

Three minutes added on to this half.

Now Delap receives a yellow for a rash challenge on Pereira, jabbing his elbow at him. No need for that.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:45 , Flo Clifford

44 mins: Wesley makes a brilliant clearance, sliding in to deny Delap as Neto races down the right flank, arcing towards goal.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:44 , Flo Clifford

43 mins: After an age James takes the free-kick, laying it off for Palmer, but it’s cleared.

Luis Araujo now punts the ball goalward but there’s no Flamengo man anywhere near it and Sanchez collects at leisure.

Scrappy now. Cucurella runs into Wesley, making zero attempt to get the ball, and acts very surprised when he concedes a free-kick.

Now Colwill makes a goal-line clearance from the resulting free-kick, heading back out! Brilliant stuff.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:39 , Flo Clifford

39 mins: Colwill slips and throws the ball out of play to buy himself some time. Chelsea have slowed things right down, which will suit them nicely.

Danilo makes a hash of a clearance and the long ball lands into the path of Neto, who runs off... and then stops, for some reason. Chelsea tried to build an attack but Flamengo have bodies back now. A chorus of boos ring out.

Jorginho concedes a free kick under pressure from Palmer.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:36 , Flo Clifford

35 mins: Enzo Maresca takes advantage of the drinks break (allowed because of high temperatures this week) to give his side some tactical advice. Neto has a rather heated-looking chat with the referee.

Break over, Chalobah glides nicely on the ball and tees up Delap, but the former Ipswich man, on the spin, clatters it off a defender.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:31 , Flo Clifford

29 mins: Chelsea counter and Malo Gusto strikes from range. It bounces a couple of yards out from Rossi, who spills it, but there’s no white shirt anywhere near him to get the rebound.

Pedro Neto holds the ball up well and nutmegs a defender; the ball falls into the path of Delap, but the move gets snuffed out. And the former Ipswich man and Pereira get in a tussle! The ref comes over to tell them to get a grip.

Break in play now for the players to grab a drink.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:28 , Flo Clifford

27 mins: Wesley sends a cross flying from the right flank but there’s no teammate anywhere in the box and James comes sprinting back to make the clearance.

Sanchez jumps to collect the resulting corner. He’s lucky to not concede another corner after holding onto the ball a fraction too long.

Wesley now cuts the ball back at the byline, getting the better of Cucurella, but Chalobah gets a toe to it before Plata can. The flag goes up for offside anyway.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:25 , Flo Clifford

24 mins: Flamengo are pressing again but not quite getting the final pass in. Right-back Wesley tries to find Plata but Cucurella steps in to make the block.

Pedro Neto wipes out de Arrascaeta on the right side of the box and the referee immediately brandishes a yellow.

Araujo takes a free-kick and it launches out for a corner - it looked to take a hefty deflection there. The resulting corner is dealt with easily.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:22 , Flo Clifford

21 mins: Ayrton Lucas pulls back Caicedo, who launches himself, predictably, onto the turf.

Rossi comes sprinting off his line to clear the ball ahead of an onrushing Delap, who gets the better of a Flamengo defender. There’s been some less than composed defending from the Brazilian side so far.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:18 , Flo Clifford

17 mins: There’s a good atmosphere so far, largely coming from the Flamengo fans glad in black and red, who haven’t lost any enthusiasm despite going behind. Hard to tell how busy the stadium is as the camera is sticking firmly to panning across the lowest tier of the stands.

Fernandez whacks his foot right across the chest of Gerson, for no apparent reason. The Flamengo player goes down a tad too lightly but there was no need for that.

GOAL! Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:15 , Flo Clifford

13 mins: Oh dear, Flamengo are caught out as the ball bounces off Wesley near the centre of the pitch, right into the path of Pedro Neto.

He runs off immediately and gets one on one with Rossi, and slots firmly past him.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:13 , Flo Clifford

12 mins: Brazil defender Danilo defends well to get the better of the countering Pedro Neto. Quite a busy first ten minutes under the scorching Philadelphia sun.

Chelsea are caught out by a long ball to Gerson down the right flank, who feints and outwits Caicedo to lay it off for De Arrascaeta, who crosses in, but Sanchez is there.

Bit of argy-bargy now as Caicedo clatters into Jorginho, who hits the deck, and the players plead their case to the ref. Caicedo goes into the book and isn’t happy about it.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:09

8 mins: Flamengo break again and Luiz Araujo runs into space down the left, but Caicedo foils the move.

Chelsea win a free-kick as Araujo takes a touch on Reece James, who leaps to the floor.

It’s a windy day in Philadelphia and balloons are floating somewhat forlornly all over the pitch, getting in everyone’s way.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:07 , Flo Clifford

6 mins: Luis has a go now and Sanchez leaps to save - a straightforward save for the keeper, but Flamengo have been lively so far.

Now Chelsea break and Delap charges down the right, maybe taking one touch too many; his strike is saved by the keeper as he tips it over the bar.

Colwill gets his head to a corner but is surrounded and can’t do anything with it.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:05 , Flo Clifford

4 mins: Colwill stamps on Gerson’s foot and the Flamengo player launches himself onto the turf.

A scrappy start to this one.

Flamengo have a great opportunity as Sanchez plays out from the back and the Brazilian side latch onto it, but an attempt goalward just runs out of zip.

Chelsea fall asleep at the back again and de Arrascaeta gets his toe to the ball but launches the ball over the bar.

Here we go!

Enzo Maresca on Liam Delap

18:59 , Flo Clifford

Enzo Maresca has a chat with DAZN pre-match.

He’s opted to start Delap over Jackson and says, “They are both very good and we decide game by game who is going to play. We have brought in some other players, Trevoh Chalobah is in from the start, so we made some changes and hopefully they are good ones.

“They are quite similar. Liam needs time to adapt to his teammates, the way we want him to play, but no doubt he is going to do well.”

Teams walking out

18:57 , Flo Clifford

The Flamengo fans are bringing the noise so far. Argentina international Enzo Fernandez gets a hearty booing.

None of the players are really getting into this individual walkout, it has to be said. Not quite like WWE.

Unfancied Botafogo stun Champions League winners PSG at Club World Cup

18:46 , Flo Clifford

Brazil's Botafogo withstood waves of attacks from Paris Saint-Germain to stun the European champions 1-0 on Thursday and throw Group B at the Club World Cup wide open.

PSG dominated possession at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena but Botafogo's resolute defence stood tall in the first competitive meeting between the two clubs.

The goal came in the 36th minute when Botafogo gained possession in midfield and Jefferson Savarino slid a pass through for Igor Jesus to run in on goal.

Jesus outmaneuvered two defenders and his shot deflected off the leg of PSG's Willian Pacho, the ball changing direction and leaving goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma flatfooted and only able to watch as the ball skipped into the net.

Lionel Messi offers rare glimpse into relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo: ‘We’re not friends’

18:30 , Flo Clifford

Lionel Messi has provided a rare glimpse into his relationship with long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo by admitting the two footballing superstars are not friends.

The legendary pair formed a rivalry that defined a generation, becoming two of the most decorated players in history across their respective esteemed careers.

They have won a combined 13 Ballon d’Ors - Messi with eight, and closest foe Ronaldo with five - and scored almost 2,000 goals for club and country between them, on top of the plethora of team accolades collected.

But despite sharing the spotlight for the best part of the last 20 years, the lives of Messi and Ronaldo rarely intertwine off the pitch, something the Argentinian magician has lifted the lid on.

‘Touched by God’ – how the world reacted to Lionel Messi’s brilliance at Club World Cup

18:20 , Flo Clifford

Another football tournament arrives, and yet again it’s Lionel Messi grabbing headlines.

Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over Porto in the Club World Cup is the first time that an MLS team has beaten a European side in official competition, but that is a mere subplot after Messi produced yet another magic moment to remind the world that he is more than capable of deciding a game even at the age of 37.

In the 54th minute of the match, with the scores at 1-1, Miami won a free-kick around 20 yards out, right on the edge of the ‘D’ in a central position.

Trademark goalscoring territory for a man of Messi’s talents – though it was still impressive how he curled the ball over the wall, on the keeper’s side, crashing it into the side-netting.

The Lionel Messi moment that inspired Inter Miami to first Club World Cup win

Lionel Messi scored a fine free-kick as Inter Miami came from behind to beat Porto 2-1 in Atlanta and get their first win of the Club World Cup.

Inter Miami – held to a goalless draw by Egyptian side Al Ahly in their opening Group A fixture at Hard Rock Stadium – recovered after falling behind to an early penalty from Porto forward Samu Aghehowa.

The Major League Soccer outfit were back on level terms just two minutes into the second half when Venezuela midfielder Telasco Segovia fired home from Marcelo Weigandt's cross.

Messi completed the turnaround in the 53rd minute when he curled a 20-yard free-kick into the top corner.

Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk charged for doping by FA and faces lengthy ban

17:40 , Flo Clifford

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk faces a lengthy ban after being charged for doping by the FA.

Mudryk, 24, was provisionally suspended after submitting an “adverse finding in a routine urine test” back in December.

The Ukrainian international pled innocence and claimed he “never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules”, but now faces a significant spell away from the game after being officially charged.

A spokesperson for the FA said: "We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA’s Anti-Doping Regulations. As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time."

New signing Liam Delap provided an assist on debut after coming off the bench in the second half.

While Flamengo were victorious in their opening game too, having travelled to the USA in a break partway through Brazil’s Serie A season. They currently lead the way in the top flight, ahead of Cruzeiro on goal difference.
