Arsenal edged towards their first League Cup final since 2018 as they beat Chelsea 3-2 in the opening leg of their semi-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Ben White, Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi were all on target for Mikel Arteta's dominant side but a double from substitute Alejandro Garnacho kept Chelsea's hopes alive.
White headed in from a trademark Arsenal corner routine in the seventh minute and Gyokeres pounced on an error by Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez to make it 2-0 just after the break. Garnacho reduced the deficit four minutes after coming off the bench but Zubimendi finished off a silky Arsenal move to restore their two-goal cushion in the 71st minute.
It looked as though Arsenal would head back across town with a commanding lead for the second leg but Garnacho was on hand to fire home through a crowd of players late on. Manchester City beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the first leg of the other semi-final on Tuesday.

Chelsea fight to stop flu spreading through squad after two fall ill
23:21 , Alex YoungChelsea are keeping their ill players away from the rest of the first team so flu does not spread, according to head coach Liam Rosenior.
Cole Palmer, Reece James and Malo Gusto had all missed the 5-1 win at Charlton on Saturday as a “precaution” but none of the trio were fit enough to return against the Gunners.
Then Chelsea were hit with a further blow as Jamie Gittens fell ill on Tuesday night, and then Liam Delap, who had been due to start, had to pull out of the game hours before kick-off, also due to illness.
Rosenior told reporters: "Jamie Gittens was ill last night. Liam Delap was due to play today and was ill four hours before the game and we couldn’t play him. Moises Caicedo was suspended. Malo Gusto was out.”
Asked whether anyone else had been impacted by illness, Rosenior replied: “Hopefully not. Not yet. I want to keep the ill players away from the group so it doesn’t spread.”
Confirming the pair had the flu, Rosenior added: “Yes, it was both of them with really high temperatures — dangerously high. Hopefully they can rest up and be OK, I’m hoping, for Saturday.”

Arteta responds to Gyokeres critics after Arsenal 'reward'
23:08 , Alex YoungMikel Arteta insisted that Viktor Gyokeres is not appreciated enough after he helped Arsenal to a Carabao Cup win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Gyokeres' performances since his £64million summer move have come under intense scrutiny, with the striker often struggling to make an impact in front of goal.
However, Arteta was adamant Gyokeres has still been contributing even without a regular supply of goals, defending him from the criticism he has faced.
"Yes, for a lot of the things that he's done, it's exactly the same," Arteta said.
"I think he had a really good performance. Overall, I think what he brings to the team.
"It's a lot, sometimes I understand that people cannot appreciate it, we certainly do that and on top of that he got rewarded with a goal."

Arsenal will wonder how they don’t have a bigger lead.
Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal
21:54 , Alex Young95min: Arsenal are awarded a penalty, but Jesus was offside before being wiped out by Hato.
Awful foul, so the Chelsea defender really got away with that one.
Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal
21:49 , Alex Young91min: Five minutes added on.
Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal
21:49 , Alex Young90min: A scream of pain from Saka as Santos connects with the back of his heel.
That looked very painful.
Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge
21:48 , Alex YoungCelebrations from both goalscorer Garnacho and head coach Rosenior despite Chelsea still losing, yet you can see why. A fine goal and so important to cut that deficit in half again.

Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal
21:45 , Alex Young85min: Estevao with a great run and strike from just inside the area, which Kepa does very well to parry away.
The offside flag is then raised.
GOAL!
21:43 , Alex Young83min: Garnacho with another lifeline for Chelsea!
This one comes from a Chelsea corner, Gabriel heads as far as Garnacho to half-volley into the net.
A brief VAR check but the goal is good.
Chelsea 1-3 Arsenal
21:41 , Alex Young83min: Mheuka and Tosin are on for Joao Pedro and Cucurella.
Chelsea 1-3 Arsenal

Chelsea 1-3 Arsenal
21:36 , Alex Young76min: Oh my word, Merino should make it four!
The ball loops up and lands perfectly for Merino to volley home, but Sanchez makes a wonder save with his foot.
Chelsea 1-3 Arsenal
21:35 , Alex Young75min: Fofana is replaced by Hato.
Matt Verri at Stamford Bridge
21:33 , Alex YoungZubimendi technically the deepest of Arsenal's midfielders but he has the ability to do that in the box. So, so composed.
And that's now a goal and an assist for Gyokeres. What a night this is for him.

GOAL!
21:31 , Alex Young71min: A hammerblow for Chelsea as Zubimendi restores the Gunners' two-goal lead.
Awful defending from Chelsea as Gyokeres and then Zubimendi are given time to find a pass and then the finish.
Chelsea 1-2 Arsenal
21:29 , Alex Young70min: Rosenior has a word with Hato on the bench.
Chelsea 1-2 Arsenal
21:27 , Alex Young68min: First changes for Arsenal as Odegaard and Trossard are replaced by Martinelli and Merino.
Chelsea 1-2 Arsenal
21:27 , Alex Young67min: After a long build-up, Rice sends the free kick miles over the bar.
Chelsea 1-2 Arsenal
21:25 , Alex Young65min: Badiashile booked for a clumsy challenge on Saka.
Chelsea 1-2 Arsenal
21:21 , Alex Young61min: Chelsea with all the momentum now.
Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge
21:20 , Alex YoungA lifeline for Chelsea as they halve the deficit, and I guess we have to declare it an inspired substitution.
Chelsea simply have to kick on following that goal now if they are to stay alive in this tie. That goal needs to spur them on.

GOAL!
21:18 , Alex Young57min: Instant impact from the substitute!
Garnacho pulls one back after being found unmarked at the back post by Neto.
A fine strike, inside the near post. Rosenior is unmoved on the touchline.
Chelsea 0-2 Arsenal
21:16 , Alex Young56min: Chelsea are hanging on a tad. Two more corners from Arsenal, two more scrambles in the area.
Chelsea 0-2 Arsenal
21:14 , Alex Young54min: Odegaard with a clean effort from 25 yards, which Sanchez parries away.
A third goal from the Gunners would kill the tie.
Chelsea 0-2 Arsenal
21:13 , Alex Young53min: Guiu and Acheampong are replaced by Garnacho and Badiashile.
Matt Verri at Stamford Bridge
21:12 , Alex YoungGyokeres with his first non-penalty goal since the start of November! Assisted very generously by Sanchez, it must be said.

Chelsea 0-2 Arsenal
21:10 , Alex Young50min: Movement on the Chelsea bench.
GOAL!
21:09 , Alex Young49min: Even Gyokeres couldn’t miss this one!
White drills a low cross into the six-yard box, Sanchez makes a howler of an attempted save and Gyokeres is there to tap into an empty net.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
21:08 , Alex Young48min: Almost a mix-up between Gabriel and Kepa, as they both try to clear the same ball, but the defender mops up.
Second half
21:04 , Alex Young46min: Back underway.
Almost time for the second half.
Any wise words from Rosenior?
Fan thoughts
20:59 , Alex YoungI’d want to see Eze come on for Odegaard early in the second half.

20:53 , Alex Young1-0, good game so far. We have neutralized Chelsea. Estevao and Pedro have been contained this far. Another goal in the second goal in second half, I will be pretty happy. #CHEARS

Matt Verri at Stamford Bridge
20:51 , Alex YoungArsenal one up and will feel they had the momentum to be more in control than that.
Wouldn't be surprised to see them be gifted a chance from Chelsea's attempts to build up.

Half-time!
20:48 , Alex Young47min: There’s the whistle.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:48 , Alex Young46min: Sanchez finally goes long with a goal kick, and Arsenal still win it back immediately.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:47 , Alex Young45min: One minute added.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:47 , Alex Young43min: And now Cucurella is booked. A bit of spice before half-time.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:45 , Alex Young42min: Estevao and Trossard into the book. Trossard yellow-carded for bringing down Estevao, and Estevao booked for asking for Trossard to be booked.
Matt Verri at Stamford Bridge
20:43 , Alex YoungLovely footwork from Saliba, looked pretty surprised that nobody in a blue shirt fancied closing him down so tried his lucky.
Great effort. Chelsea fans getting very irritated with their side.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:42 , Alex Young40min: Saliba goes for a curler into the far top corner, and he had Sanchez worried! The ball lands on the top of the net. That was a great effort.
Matt Verri at Stamford Bridge
20:42 , Alex YoungAfter Martinelli scored a hat-trick on Sunday, Trossard is out with a point to prove tonight.
Started really well, working hard off the ball and sharp on it. Those combinations with Timber have been dangerous.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:41 , Alex Young39min: Gyokeres looks to get on the end of a great Odegaard cross, but his header lands closer to the corner flag.
A lot of huff and puff, but he’s just not very good at the moment.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:38 , Alex Young35min: Arsenal enjoying another extended spell of possession.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:33 , Alex Young31min: Kepa is getting much busier. This time it is Estevao to cut in and force a good save.
Chelsea attacking Arsenal’s left-hand side.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:32 , Alex Young31min: Better from Sanchez, who plucks this one out of the air with confidence.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:31 , Alex Young30min: Smart from Trossard to jink inside Estevao and win another corner...
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:30 , Alex Young28min: Oh, another chance!
Joao Pedro does very well to collect the ball with his back to goal, before spinning and trying to find the far corner. He has beaten Kepa but there is no team-mate at the back post for a tap in!
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:29 , Alex Young27min: Another half-chance for Chelsea as Acheampong is found in space on the right, and stings Kepa’s palms with a shot from the edge of the area.
Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge
20:27 , Alex YoungIt feels as though Arsenal are first to every second ball at the moment, which does not bode well for passive Chelsea.
A really testing first 24 minutes for Liam Rosenior in his first home game as head coach.

Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:26 , Alex Young24min: Odegaard wins a free kick around 30 yards out. Rice fancies it but the captain takes, and doesn’t beat the first man.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:25 , Alex Young23min: Saka pounces on a loose ball and charges over the halfway line looking to spark a counter attack, unfortunately it’s only Gyokeres ahead of him and the striker is simply unable to run fast enough after a pass.
Matt Verri at Stamford Bridge
20:23 , Alex YoungIt’s fair to say Arsenal are fancying their chances with Sanchez. Pressing high when he has the ball and putting the set-pieces right on top of him.
Good tactic with the Chelsea goalkeeper all over the place so far.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:23 , Alex Young20min: A bit better from Chelsea, who are starting to play around Arsenal’s press and push the visitors back.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:19 , Alex Young17min: Chelsea fans taunt Arsenal supporters with “Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that.”
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:18 , Alex Young16min: Chelsea survive this one, but again Sanchez is less than convincing as he flaps for the ball.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:17 , Alex Young15min: Decent from Gyokeres, who takes the ball with his back to goal and three Chelsea players around him, but twists and turns and makes space for a shot. He wins a corner.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:14 , Alex Young12min: First shot on target from Chelsea as Fernandez is invited to run and let fly, which he does from 25 yards, but it’s down Kepa’s throat.
Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
20:12 , Alex Young10min: Arsenal are pressing Chelsea really high up, almost at the end of Sanchez’s penalty area, and Trossard is almost played in for another.
GOAL!
20:10 , Alex Young7min: That didn’t take long!
Another set-piece, another goal for Arsenal as White heads home Rice’s corner!
Sanchez completely stranded, and now Chelsea need a new plan.
Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal
20:07 , Alex Young5min: Guiu penalised for, somehow, fouling Gabriel.
Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal
20:05 , Alex Young3min: It’s headed out by Arsenal. Cucurella then wins a corner.
Fernandez’s second poor set-piece delivery in as many minutes as the cross sails into the near side netting.
Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal
20:03 , Alex Young2min: Half a sight of goal for Saka as Arsenal go straight on the front foot.
Atmosphere has certainly improved. Fernandez has won a free kick around 45 yards out, out wide on the right.
Kick-off!
20:02 , Alex Young1min: Here we go!
Chelsea great Eddie McCreadie is remembered ahead of kick-off with a minute’s applause.
Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge
19:57 , Alex YoungMust admit there really isn't much of an atmosphere building here yet. A slightly subdued crowd so far. Let's hope it ramps us once the game is underway...
Here come the players!
Not long to go now. Will Arteta win a semi-final for the first time in six years?
Rosenior gives every player a handshake as they head off the pitch to the dressing room.

"But, we will be ready when the whistle blows."
A huge night for Liam Rosenior, who makes his Stamford Bridge bow.
The new head coach can get most of the fan base immediately on side with a victory tonight, but the odds are stacked against him.

Chelsea missing FIVE stars
19:13 , Alex YoungChelsea are missing Palmer, James, Gusto, Delap, Gittens and the suspended Caicedo.
Huge, huge absentees.
Arsenal are able to start Saliba and Trossard after they recovered from their knocks.
Sky Sports are reporting that Liam Delap is missing out through illness.
Liam Rosenior should confirm shortly.
Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge
19:07 , Alex YoungChelsea have been hit with a triple injury blow, with Cole Palmer, Reece James and Malo Gusto all missing from the matchday squad.
The trio were all doubts for Wednesday evening’s meeting with the Gunners after being left out of the squad for Saturday's FA Cup win at Charlton through "precautionary" measures.
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior told reporters on Monday that a late call will be made on their involvement, following discussions with the club's medical team on Tuesday. None have been passed fit.
Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens were also absent from the squad, though it remains to be seen if that was injury-related or a simpler selection decision. Moises Caicedo missed out due to his third suspension of the season.
An experimental-looking Chelsea team was named, with the likes of regular starters Robert Sanchez, Trevoh Chalobah, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez alongside rotation options Estevao, Josh Acheampong and striker Marc Guiu.
Matt Verri at Stamford Bridge
19:00 , Alex YoungArteta has stuck with Kepa in goal, who has started every domestic cup match so far this season.
Aside from that it's the strongest lineup he could have picked.
That means, for all yesterday's smoke and mirrors about Saliba's fitness, the Frenchman does start alongside Gabriel. Arteta going all out.

Arsenal's atrocious run
18:30 , Alex YoungArsenal's record in semi-finals under Arteta is atrocious.
Since winning the FA Cup in 2020, Arsenal have drawn two and lost six of the eight semi-final fixtures and scored just two goals.
2021: Villarreal, Europa League
- 1st leg: lost 2-1 away; 2nd leg: drew 0-0 at home
2022: Liverpool, Carabao Cup
- 1st leg: drew 0-0 away; 2nd leg: lost 2-0 at home
2025: Newcastle, Carabao Cup
- 1st leg: lost 2-0 home; 2nd leg: lost 2-0 away
2025: PSG, Champions League
- 1st leg: lost 1-0 home; 2nd leg: lost 2-1 away
Arteta issues Arsenal challenge
18:20 , Alex YoungMikel Arteta wants Arsenal to use the Carabao Cup as a launchpad for Premier League success this season.
The Gunners are six points clear at the top of the table and now turn their focus to a semi-final tie against Chelsea in the League Cup.
During his time as Pep Guardiola's assistant, Arteta was involved in the Manchester City sides in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons that won the competition and then went on to lift the Premier League trophy as well a few months later.
That is the target for Arsenal, who are competing on four fronts as they look to win silverware for the first time since the 2020 FA Cup.
"Yes, as I said before, when you get to these stages in the competition, you get to the final and you go over the line and win it, it brings energy," Arteta said.
"It brings belief and the sense that everybody is very important and playing part of that. I think it's something when you get there and win it everybody remembers and if not, nobody does.
"So once you get there, get the job done."

Rosenior plays down big game talk
18:11 , Alex YoungChelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has played down suggestions his Stamford Bridge debut against London rivals Arsenal is the biggest game of his managerial career.
Rosenior arrived in west London following an impressive spell with French club Strasbourg after almost leading Hull to the Championship play-offs following an interim stint in charge of Derby.
"People will look at it that way; I don't see it that way," he replied when asked if the visit of the Gunners will be his biggest match as a manager.
"Every session that I take, every meeting that I take, every game that we play is the most important thing. I live in the now.
"It is the most important game because it's the next one. I mean that. If you start to prioritise games or think something is more important than the other then you're not focused.
"I don't care if it's a pre-season game, I'm doing it at my maximum, and I expect that from whichever group I work with.
"That keeps me calm because I'm happy with the process in which we work as a staff, which the players are taking on.
"I'm not making it any bigger than the fact it's the next game and we have to win, that's the way I see it."

Peek behind the scenes
18:04 , Alex YoungThe away dressing room is already taking shape.

Chelsea vs Arsenal prediction
17:59 , Alex YoungIt remains to be seen what Rosenior’s preferred lineup will be, but we will be able to get a pretty good gauge at what he believes is his strongest XI here.
Will the Blues continue that feel-good, new manager bounce, or will Rosenior be dealt a harsh dose of the reality that he faces with the title favourites in town?
It promises to be a cracking encounter that could go either way, particularly with Arsenal’s defensive absentees.
Draw, 2-2.
Predicted line-ups
17:52 , Alex YoungChelsea predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Fernandez, James; Estevao, Palmer, Neto; Delap
Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Kepa; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber; Zubimendi, Rice, Odegaard; Saka, Gyokeres, Martinelli
Early Arsenal team news
17:47 , Alex YoungMikel Arteta has several fitness concerns to contend with tonight.
William Saliba and Leandro Trossard are both doubts for the match, having missed the FA Cup win over Portsmouth last time out.
Riccardo Calafiori is "weeks" away from returning with a muscle injury, with Cristhian Mosquera similarly not close to being available again after an ankle issue.
The Arsenal boss also gave no clarity on Piero Hincapie's potential return date, after the defender limped off against Liverpool a week ago with a hamstring issue.
Myles Lewis-Skelly has struggled for form recently, so Jurrien Timber could shift over to left-back with Ben White starting on the right.
Arteta has a decision to make in goal. Kepa Arrizabalaga has started in goal in all of Arsenal's domestic cup matches so far this season, and it remains to be seen whether the Arsenal manager sticks with him or brings David Raya into the side.
The favoured midfield three of Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard could all return, while Gabriel Martinelli will hope to keep his place after a hat-trick against Portsmouth.
Up front, Kai Havertz is unlikely to be ready to start. Gabriel Jesus has looked sharper than Viktor Gyokeres, but there is every chance Arteta opts to keep trying to play his summer signing into form.

Early Chelsea team news
17:39 , Alex YoungChelsea head coach Liam Rosenior will make a late call on whether Cole Palmer, Reece James and Malo Gusto are involved tonight, after the trio sat out Saturday’s 5-1 FA Cup third-round win at Charlton as a “precaution”.
Offering an update on Monday, head coach Liam Rosenior said: “We had no injury problems coming out of Charlton game, which was a really good thing,”.
“I’ll make a decision on Cole, Reece and Malo [on Tuesday]. They’re being managed.
“It was a good time for them to rest in the FA Cup game. There’s no point taking risks when you feel you can win the game [without them].”
Chelsea will be without midfielder Moises Caicedo because he is suspended following a second yellow card in the competition in December’s quarter-final win at Cardiff.
Caicedo was sent off in the last meeting between Chelsea and Arsenal, and will serve his third suspension of the season.
But Marc Cucurella is back available after serving a one-game suspension of his own at Charlton.
Rosenior could choose between Alejandro Garnacho or Jamie Gittens on the left wing, but both started at Charlton and he may prefer to use Pedro Neto there instead.
