Chelsea vs Arsenal: Extra time and penalty rules for Europa League final in Baku

Chelsea and Arsenal renew their rivalry in Baku this evening with the Europa League trophy on the line.

The two London sides are seeking to end their campaign on a high and the form book is delicately poised, with each side winning their respective home matches against the other in the Premier League.

On top of that, Arsenal have the added incentive of securing a spot in next season's Champions League with a victory, while it may be Maurizio Sarri's last game in charge of Chelsea .

Heading to a neutral venue, it could be a tight affair and may go all the way to extra time and penalties - just like Chelsea’s semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt at Stamford Bridge.

Should the match between Arsenal and Chelsea go the distance, questions may be asked about the format - and we have the answers.

When will extra-time be played?

If the score remains level after the completion of ninety minutes, the match will progress into 30 minutes of extra time - separated into two halves of 15 minutes. If the scores are still level after the conclusion of this period, a penalty shoot-out will decide the winners.

Will the ABBA format be in effect for penalties?

No. After an initial trial, it was announced in November 2018 that due a lack of support and because of its complexity, the ABBA format would no longer be used in future competitions.

As such, should the game go to penalties, the format will be the standard approach that we all know and love.

What time will the game finish in Baku?

Scheduled to kick-off at 23:00 local time in Baku, normal time is expected to finish at around 01:45 on Thursday morning local time. Should the game advance into extra time and penalties, the match would finish at 02:30.

This could lead to travel problems for fans who made their way to Azerbaijan and disruption in the area.
