Chelsea vs Ajax LIVE: Champions League result, latest updates and reaction after big win

LIVE: Chelsea vs Ajax - (Chelsea FC via Getty Images)

Chelsea vs Ajax - LIVE

Chelsea made it four wins in a row across all competitions with a comfortable victory over Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Blues’ upturn in form started with the 1-0 win against Benfica in the second fixture of this season’s League Phase and there was never any danger they were going to slip-up on a wet night in west London against a struggling Ajax side.

An extraordinary first-half at Stamford Bridge produced five goals, three penalties and a red card as Enzo Maresca’s decision to make wholesale changes ultimately paid off. Marc Guiu, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez - on his return from injury - and Estevao were all on target in the opening 45 minutes, with Wout Weghort’s effort from the spot proving to be no more than a souvenir on his return to England.

Tyrique George then scored his first Champions League goal within three minutes of being brought on right at the start of the second half to add gloss on an emphatic scoreline for the Blues. Follow the game back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Dom Smith and Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge!

35 min: Tosin was shown a yellow card for his foul. Meanwhile, you feel Jorgensen should have saved the penalty.

Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge

One of those penalties that just slips under the elbow before it's down on the turf. Ajax back in it out of nothing, but for how long? More goals for Chelsea in this game, you feel.

Chelsea 1-0 Ajax

20:24 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

24 min: The Ajax fans are not happy with this change and are making their feelings loud and clear as Gloukh is replaced by Mokio.

The change is understandable given Ajax are down to 10 men.

Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge

20:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea make their man advantage pay just seconds after Taylor's red card, and it's Marc Guiu with his first Champions League goal for the club.

Scruffy finish, but he was in the right place at the right time to collect Fofana's header and convert.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Ajax | Marc Guiu ‘18

20:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: GOALLLLLLLL

Marc Guiu is in space six yards out to turn home Wesley Fofana's knockdown.

Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge

20:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Really not a nice challenge from Taylor on Buonanotte. A yellow was shown immediately, but some in the press box believe it should be a red. Off goes the ref to take a look....

That was quick.

Chelsea 0-0 Ajax

20:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

16 min: Kenneth Taylor is shown a yellow card as he catches Buonanotte high on the ankle.

That could be upgraded to a red card.

VAR check and the Ajax captain is sent-off!

Chelsea 0-0 Ajax

20:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

13 min: Great pass from Enzo and a great run from Guiu behind the Ajax defence, but Pasveer is quickly off his line to block the attempt.

Sam Tabuteau at Stamford Bridge

20:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Jamie Gittens looks keen to impress with Enzo Maresca watching on intently from the touchline. It's been an underwhelming start to his Chelsea career, so a performance here tonight would do him a world of good.

Chelsea 0-0 Ajax

20:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Outrageous piece of skill from Gittens as he controls a cross-field pass from Enzo with his back. However, the move is halted because the winger was in an offside position when the ball was played.

Chelsea 0-0 Ajax

20:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: First chance of the game falls to Ajax as they open Chelsea up with ease. Gloukh races through, gets the better of Lavia and cuts the ball back for Godts in the area who sees an effort blocked.

Chelsea 0-0 Ajax

20:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

6 min: Ajax aren’t showing any signs of a lack of confidence. They are getting the ball down and looking to play through Chelsea.

The Ajax DNA is certainly on show.

Chelsea 0-0 Ajax

20:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

4 min: Chelsea have an opportunity to break after Ajax commit players forward. However, Enzo’s weak pass for Estevao is cut out and the visitors survive.

Chelsea 0-0 Ajax

There was a big applause and positive reception from the travelling Ajax fans when Jorrel Hato came onto the pitch to warm up.

The 19-year-old joined Chelsea from Ajax for £37.5million this summer and was seen as one of the Dutch club's best players before he left for Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea changes

19:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Maresca has opted to make ten changes from the side which beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the weekend, with Romeo Lavia the only one to retain his place.

Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Jamie Gittens and Wesley Fofana are among those handed a starting berth.

Chelsea: Tosin Adarabioyo dismisses transfer fear

19:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tosin Adarabioyo insists he is not worried that being Chelsea’s oldest outfield player in a regime that promotes youth may cause him problems later down the line.

Chelsea’s recruitment strategy since their takeover by Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly in 2022 has seen the Blues target the signings of young players almost exclusively.

On Saturday, Enzo Maresca named the youngest starting XI of any club in the Premier League so far this season, with the team he put out for the 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest having an average age of just 23 years and 345 days.

When Tosin - whose birthday was last month - appeared from the bench in the second half, he became the first Chelsea player aged 28 or over to feature for Maresca during the Italian’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.

Ryan Mavuma-McQueen and Reggie Walsh are on the bench for Chelsea. 16 and 17 years-old, respectively, it's a huge moment for the teenagers and a show of faith from manager Enzo Maresca.

If Mavuma-McQueen comes on, he'd become one of the 10 youngest players to play for Chelsea.

Understandable, I think, why Enzo Maresca has decided to change his goalkeeper tonight and hand a rest to first-choice Robert Sanchez.

But that places some pressure on the man who comes in, Filip Jorgensen.

This is still a high profile game and one Chelsea are expected to win.

There's also a change of goalkeeper for Ajax but for different reasons as Vitezslav Jaros is dropped in favour of Remko Pasveer, who is... 41!

Maresca delivers Hato verdict

18:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Maresca has revealed that Jorrel Hato initially “struggled” to adapt to English football, but insisted the Chelsea teenager is “getting better and better” ahead of facing former club Ajax.

Hato swapped the Dutch giants for Stamford Bridge in August in a deal worth around £37.5million.

The versatile Netherlands international can play at either centre-back or left-back and has featured five times across all competitions for the Blues since his arrival, starting three games.

“We are very happy with Jorrel since he arrived,” Chelsea boss Maresca said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. “He is trying to adapt a little bit to different competitions, English football, but we are very happy with him."

Heitinga expects dominant Chelsea side

18:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Ajax head coach John Heitinga admits he is well aware of the threat Chelsea pose.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, the Dutchman said: We have looked very closely at our game plan. Chelsea are a very strong opponent and it’s no coincidence that they are the Club World Cup winners. I know the Premier League and Chelsea’s strength very well. We must demand the utmost from ourselves.

"It's clear that they’re a strong team, which is why it’s very important that we execute our own plan. Of course, it’s also a question of which players they’ll select tomorrow. They’re a side with great strength, positional rotations and full-backs who move into midfield."

Maresca is wrong about Chelsea's biggest problem

18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea are in a good place ahead of welcoming Ajax to Stamford Bridge, writes Dom Smith.

The Blues have won three consecutive games for the first time since the Club World Cup and deserved, on balance, maximum points from each of them, with controlled performances against Benfica, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

But there remain kinks to their game that Chelsea must iron out — and one particular trend they must kill off entirely: ill discipline.

Chelsea come into the game having received red cards in five of their last six matches, a feat that sits somewhere on the plane between almost impressive and extremely poor.

Predicted Chelsea XI

18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Joao Pedro is suspended tonight after he was sent off for a second bookable offence in the Blues’ last Champions League game, a home 1-0 win over Benfica three weeks ago.

In his absence, Enzo Maresca may look to bring in Marc Guiu, who was recalled from a loan spell with Sunderland earlier this season and impressed off the bench against Nottingham Forest as he stretched the hosts’ defence.

Maresca started Romeo Lavia at Forest and then replaced him with Moises Caicedo at half-time, explaining that neither was fit to play the full match, so he was managing their minutes.

Chelsea predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Gusto, Tosin, Chalobah, Cucurella; Caicedo, Santos; Neto, Estevao, Gittens; Guiu.

Score prediction: Home win

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Given the nature of both teams and how they like to set-up, this fixture should guarantee goals. That said, perhaps only for one side as Ajax are yet to open their account in the competition this season.

Furthermore, Chelsea will be without the likes of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro which means the onus will fall on Alejandro Garnacho, Marc Guiu and Pedro Neto to ensure the hosts come out on top.

Chelsea to win, 2-0.

Chelsea team news: Fernandez set to return

17:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea hope to have Enzo Fernandez available for selection after the midfielder missed the win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend with a knee issue.

The Argentine has trained with his team-mates ahead of the Champions League fixture, a positive sign that he will be involved against Ajax.

Elsewhere, Jorrel Hato will hope to feature against the club he left in the summer and Malo Gusto is likely to start ahead of his Premier League ban at the weekend.
