GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Southampton (Werner 84)

Premier League: Not even Timo Werner can miss at the far post, the German tapping in from close range at the far post after getting on the end of a Cesar Azpilicueta cross on the half-volley. On as a substitute, Ross Barkley’s ball to the far post from deep was sublime.

Red card! Southampton down to 10 men

Premier League: After a pitchside look at the monitor on the advice of his VAR Mike Dean, Martin Atkinson sends off James Ward-Prowse for a foul on Jorginho in the game between Chelsea and Southampton. The midfielder played every Premier League minute for Southampton last season but he’ll miss at least 194 of them in this campaign. It remains 1-1 but the Saints are down to 10 men.

Leeds 1-0 Watford: Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier drops the ball, Christian Kabasele pokes home for Watford and his “equaliser” is disallowed for reasons that remain unclear.

Championship: Jimmy Dunne equalises for QPR against Preston at Loftus Road.

Chelsea 1-1 Southampton: Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy saves superbly from Timo Werner, played in by a Romelu Lukaku backheel, to keep Chelsea at bay.

League One: In the only game that matters in the third tier, Portsmouth have gone 4-0 up against high-flying Sunderland. But what’s this? The pitch is looking increasingly unplayable. It’s sodden! A morass! Abandoning this game and replaying it at a later date would be the quite obviously fair and just thing to do.

WSL match report: Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

Fran Kirby masterminded Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Brighton with three assists, for Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr and Beth England, to lift the Blues to the summit of the Women’s Super League table for for a few hours at least, writes Suzanne Wrack.

Exclusive interview: Richard Keogh

In a fascinating chat with the Blackpool defender and former Derby County captain, our chief football correspondent David Hytner gets the lowdown on the infamous night on which Keogh, a backseat passenger in a car driven by his drunk former team-mate Tom Lawrence, was abandoned by the Welshman and other team-mates following a collision after – irony of ironies – a team bonding session at the pub.

Subsequently sacked by Derby while Lawrence and his fellow drink driver Mason Bennett were not, Keogh suffered a serious knee injury in the crash which left him sidelined for a year and sinking into depression.

He discusses how his wife Charlie helped get him through the dark times, his return to action with Huddersfield and then Blackpool, as well as his subsequent £2.6m victory in a court case over his former club. He also explains the state of his current relationship with various former team-mates who, to all intents and purposes, left him for dead.

Women’s Super League: Chelsea hosted Brighton in the first of the weekend’s WSL fixtures and Emma Hayes’s side went top of the table courtesy of a 3-1 win at Kingsmeadow.
