Chelsea urged to complete Ivan Toney transfer and fix key Graham Potter problem

One of Chelsea's key problems under Graham Potter this season has been their ability to score goals. The Blues have scored just 29 goals in 27 games this season with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kai Havertz struggling for form.

Despite the arrivals of Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke, Chelsea still find themselves languishing down the table - 11 points adrift of the top four. football.london understands the west London outfit are set to complete the signing of RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku this summer after agreeing a pre-contract with the Frenchman.

Nkunku has scored 17 goals in all competitions so far this season and would be a crucial signing to correct a major problem for Potter at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea may need further attacking reinforcements with the likes of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech both being linked with transfer exits - with Brentford star Ivan Toney being amongst the players tipped to complete a move to the Blues.

Toney is the second-highest English scorer in the Premier League this season after Harry Kane and could turn out to be a great acquisition considering his strong performance this term. The Brentford striker has scored 16 goals in the English top-flight this season, more than half of what Chelsea have managed as a team in the 2022/23 campaign.

Former Blues defender Jason Cundy has encouraged the west Londoners to pursue a deal for Toney in the summer transfer window. Cundy said: “Do we [Chelsea] need a centre forward?” Yes, we do.

"Ivan Toney has his issues off the field with what’s happening with the betting situation he’s been charged with - let’s wait and see. He’s a Chelsea centre-forward to me, the way he is, the way he looks, the way he plays.

"We need a platform. We need a rugged, hard, clever, intelligent footballer up front.

"He ticks a lot of boxes. Plus, he knows the Premier League.”

If Chelsea were successful in signing Toney, there may be issues because he has been charged by the FA for breaking betting rules with an alleged 262 charges against him. If the FA are to penalise him while he is at Chelsea, that could pose a serious issue for the team with a ban being the most likely outcome for the 27-year-old striker.

There is yet to be a verdict given following Toney's charges, but it would be a huge risk for the Blues to pursue a deal for him before the FA come to a final decision. Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Victor Osimhen despite the return of Romelu Lukaku from his loan spell with Inter Milan this summer.
