Chelsea turn to striker that wants "to surpass Didier Drogba" after Olivier Giroud exit

Thomas Tuchel pulled no punches when it came to reviewing his misfiring Chelsea strikers.

The German coach helped transform Chelsea after his January appointment, but his Midas touch failed to translate to the players at the top end of the pitch.

"We need more goals and we rely on anybody and we want to trust anybody who is capable of scoring," he said in April.

"But you just need to read the numbers, our top scorers have six goals. This is clearly not enough for the demands, the expectations and the targets Chelsea football club has and what we demand.

"I say this without any anger and without being rude to any of the offensive guys, I think they're very well aware of it.”

So far, it has been a quiet window for the Blues with Euro 2020 ensuring the transfer window has got off to a slow start nationwide.

But with that tournament ending, deals are beginning to trickle in and there is already news of a potential striker departure.

Olivier Giroud, who signed a one-year contract extension weeks ago, is closing in on a £1.7m transfer to AC Milan, with his minutes likely to be limited once again.

That leaves Tuchel with just two senior strikers in the shape of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham, but with the Chelsea boss opting to start the former on the left and the latter on the bench a new solution looks likely.

Erling Haaland has been extensively linked, but Borussia Dortmund are steadfast in their desire to keep Norwegian, particularly after netting almost £73m for Jadon Sancho.

That leaves Chelsea scrambling for options to improve a side that ended last season as the champions of Europe.

That scramble could hand Armando Broja the chance to stake his claim at Stamford Bridge after a stunning loan spell with Vitesse Arnhem.

Broja netted 11 times in the Eredivisie and was one of the top scoring teenagers in Europe’s top leagues.

Football.London report that the 19-year-old will be given an opportunity to impress Tuchel ahead of potentially earning a place in the squad next season.

There have also been claims that the Blues are ready to give Broja a new long-term deal at the club, with high hopes about his future in the game.

Placing that kind of pressure on a youngster could backfire, but the confident striker has already opened up on his appetite to be the best he can be.

Rather than shy away from lofty comparisons, Broja himself admitted that he wanted to emulate and eventually surpass Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

Speaking to Goal whilst on loan with Vitesse, he said of his time at Cobham: "I was like: 'Wow! That's Frank Lampard, [Didier] Drogba or John Terry right in front of me' when I would see them around.

"I loved to take pictures with them because I wanted to be them. I wanted to be in their shoes at the top level.

"Now I am approaching the age they were when they were playing, I want to try and surpass Drogba. It might not be easy, but that’s my mentality and how I am feeling."
