Chelsea transfer spree not enough to join title race, warns Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher has described Liverpool as "masters of the transfer market" and believes they are well placed to defend their Premier League crown despite a quiet window.

Liverpool have signed defender Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos, while they are biding their time in pursuit of Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara,

The Reds were expected to move for Timo Werner earlier in the summer but instead the Germany international plumped for a switch to Stamford Bridge as Jurgen Klopp's transfer plans were rocked by the coronavirus pandemic.

"You trust Liverpool on transfers," Carragher told the Sunday Times.

"They are masters of the transfer market in terms of getting players for good fees and receiving big fees for their players. There would have been more reinforcements but for Covid-19. Liverpool [instead of Chelsea] would have signed Timo Werner if the situation were not as it is. I hope we can get Thiago [Alcântara] over the line."

Instead the Reds have watched on as their rivals have strengthened. Chelsea, in particular, have made a real statement of intent with an unprecedented £200million spending spree, with Kai Havertz (below) and Ben Chilwell among those joining Werner at the Bridge.

Arsenal, too, have reinforced, with Gabriel Magalhaes and Willian arriving, while Tottenham have added Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Matt Doherty and Joe Hart. Manchester United will reflect on a successful window if they can add Jadon Sancho before the October deadline.

But regardless of all that, Carragher says the chasing pack have not done enough to trouble either Liverpool or Manchester City in the coming campaign.

"I still see it as Liverpool and City," he added. "There is too big a gap to bridge for Chelsea and United to gain 25, 30 points."
