Chelsea transfer rumours: £25m Mendy deal close, Rice the next deal, defender exit

After an exciting summer of transfer activity, Chelsea are less than a week away from kicking off their 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

The Blues travel to Brighton & Hove Albion in the first game of the season with the club’s fans keen to see some of the club’s new recruits in action.

Frank Lampard’s squad has been significantly boosted by six new arrivals at Stamford Bridge this summer, who cost the club in excess of £200million.

However, they are far from done, with at least one more face expected to sign before the transfer deadline on October 5. Here are Wednesday morning’s transfer rumours.

Chelsea close in on Mendy

Chelsea are close to signing Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, according to Telefoot .

The Senegal international is expected to cost around £25million after helping Rennes to a third-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.

Mendy will offer stiff competition to Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has had a shaky two years at Stamford Bridge since arriving from Athletic Bilbao.

Mendy joined Rennes from Reims in 2019. The 28-year-old has eight caps for Senegal.

Tomori set to join Everton on loan

Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori is close to finalising a season-long loan move to Everton, according to Sky Sports .

Everton have moved for the 22-year-old having failed to land Gabriel Magalhaes, who joined Arsenal from Lille.

Everton have been busy in the market over the last week, significantly enhancing their midfield by signing James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Tomori impressed for Chelsea last season with his form earning him an England debut against Kosovo in November.

Having signed a new five-year deal in December, Tomori did not feature for Lampard’s side after the season resumed following lockdown in June.

Chelsea eye Rice after Mendy

The Blues will step up their interest in West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice after completing the Mendy deal, according to Sky Sport journalist Angelo Mangiante .

Rice is naturally a central midfielder but has impressed while playing at centre-back for the Hammers.

The England international may cost Chelsea up to £80million, which would be a new club record.

Rice, 21, is under contract at the London Stadium until 2024.

He has made 110 appearances for West Ham since breaking through in 2017.
