Chelsea transfer round-up: Werner role in Havertz talks as keeper shortlist narrows

While Chelsea secured a top-four place and Champions League qualification with a 2-0 victory over Wolves on the final day of the Premier League season, the hard work is only just starting for Frank Lampard’s side.

As already completed moves for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner indicate, the Blues are keen to close the gap on their rivals at the top of the Premier League. But as their inconsistent season shows, they still have work to do.

Kai Havertz is their chief target, and there is an update on his potential move to Stamford Bridge, while left-back and goalkeeper have been mooted as possible positions to strengthen, too.

Here, we round up the latest transfer rumours surrounding the Blues as they enter a critical summer transfer window.

Timo Werner's role in Kai Havertz move

New Chelsea signing Timo Werner is keen to see fellow German international Kai Havertz join him in London. Werner secured a £53million move earlier this year and was present at Chelsea’s victory over Wolves at the weekend.

Football.london understands that he is now attempting to convince Havertz to join him, with the pair speaking behind the scenes as Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen negotiate a transfer fee.

Per the report, Havertz is keen to make the move to Chelsea, and with his contract set to expire in 2022, Bayer Leverkusen recognise that this may be the final summer in which they can sell him for significant value, even in a reduced market.

The midfielder scored 12 goals and provided six assists in the Bundesliga alone this season. This follows a breakout 17-goal league campaign as a 19-year-old last year. With such a prolific goalscoring record from midfield, Havertz represents a tantalising prospect to add to the Chelsea attack.

Chelsea narrow goalkeeper shortlist

Kepa Arrizabalaga was dropped for Chelsea’s final Premier League match of the season, with Willy Caballero starting in his place.

There have been plenty of suggestions that Frank Lampard is keen to sign a new goalkeeper throughout the season.

Now, with the campaign finished and the transfer window looming, it seems as though such a move is being put in place.

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea will attempt to sign a goalkeeper this summer as Lampard is not convinced Kepa has a long-term future at the club.

Kepa has made a series of high-profile mistakes and is now up for sale. Chelsea, though, still want to recoup as much as possible of the world-record £71m they paid to sign him two years ago.

Sky Sports names three players currently on the Blues’ shortlist. They include Burnley ’s Nick Pope, who kept 15 clean sheets this season behind an excellent defence, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, though he will cost all of his £110m release clause, and Ajax’s young goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Dean Henderson is also believed to be on Lampard's hitlist.

New Willian deal on the cards

With his contract at the club set to expire following the weekend’s FA Cup final against Arsenal, Willian is set to sign a new contract that will see him remain with Chelsea for at least another two years.

According to Sky Sports, Lampard was hopeful a deal could be struck between the two parties and progress has been made in recent days with Willian now expected to stay with the team.

The Brazilian had been holding out for a three-year deal, but Chelsea had offered only a two-year extension.

Willian has been in excellent form since the restart, providing four goals and three assists in that period. His good performances attracted interest from Arsenal, who were closely tracking his future, as well as more distant interest from David Beckham’s Inter Miami, Barcelona and Manchester United.

Despite a list of clubs considering a move for his services, though, Willian is now expected to stay at Stamford Bridge, which will please his manager greatly.
