Chelsea transfer round-up: Declan Rice chase continues as Kai Havertz hails Lampard

Kai Havertz has finally been confirmed as a Chelsea player, bringing to an end weeks of speculation about one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer.

The attacking midfielder has joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £72million plus add-ons, making him the Stamford Bridge side's record signing and sixth new arrival ahead of the new season.

We've got an update on another potential big-money capture as Frank Lampard looks to put the finishing touches to his squad, having already signed Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr, as well as Havertz.

With just over a week to go until the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season, here is the latest Chelsea transfer news.

Kai Havertz has revealed he idolised Frank Lampard as a player as he explained the role the Chelsea boss played in convincing him to sign.

As goalscoring midfielders go, Havertz could learn from none better than Lampard, who is Chelsea's all-time leading marskman with 211 from his 648 games for the club.

After signing a five-year deal with Chelsea, Havertz said of Lampard: "Of course he had a big impact on my decision because I loved him as a player and watched him very often.

"And I think I can learn from him as a manager as well."

Chelsea 'to swoop for United keeper'

Chelsea are reportedly ready to swoop for goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who may be allowed to leave Manchester United this month.

Lampard has his eye on a new shot-stopper this summer to at the very least provide competition for £71m keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has struggling to convince.

United's number one David de Gea is set to be challenged by Dean Henderson this coming season following his impressing campaign on loan at Sheffield United.

Opportunities for Romero will be few and far between next season, and United's executive vice chairman Woodward is reportedly open to selling the Argentine.

And Chelsea are considering making a move, according to The Athletic.

Blues' Rice pursuit isn’t over

It has already been a bumper summer for Chelsea, but their spending might not be finished just yet.

They may need to sell in order to buy, and N’Golo Kante continues to be linked with a move away as manager Frank Lampard attempts to free up funds to bring Declan Rice back to west London.

West Ham midfielder Rice joined the Hammers after being released by Chelsea as a teenager, and is reportedly valued at around £70m.

As reported by Football Insider, Real Madrid and Inter Milan are both interested in Kante, who could be allowed to leave for £60m to ensure Chelsea are able to move for Rice this summer.

The 29-year-old Frenchman struggled with injuries last season, starting just 20 league games, while 21-year-old Rice - an ever present in the top flight - finished last season as West Ham’s player of the year.

Football Insider had earlier reported that Chelsea favoured a player-plus-cash deal for Rice, who is in England’s squad for their upcoming Uefa Nations League games.
