Chelsea transfer round-up: Blues warned over Rice as Rennes make further Mendy demand

Chelsea are probably quite happy with how the transfer window has gone so far.

The Blues have added Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr and Ben Chilwell to their already gifted squad.

Only two of those new arrivals were involved in Chelsea ’s first game of the season, a 3-1 win at Brighton. But there is still plenty of excitement surrounding the new campaign after the improvements made to the squad.

And there might even be more additions before the close of the transfer window next month, with Frank Lampard believed to be targeting a goalkeeper and another centre-back.

Here we take a look at all the latest Chelsea transfer news.

Chelsea had option to sign Thiago before Liverpool move

Chelsea were contacted by Bayern Munich over the availability of midfielder Thiago before he joined Liverpool, the Athletic have reported.

The Spaniard completed his £20m move to the champions on Friday having been linked with the Reds throughout the summer.

But Thiago might have ended up at Chelsea had they been interested in signing a new midfielder.

The Blues - along with Arsenal - were reportedly offered the chance to sign the 29-year-old as Bayern searched for a suitable fee, with his contract into its final year.

West Ham warn Chelsea over Rice pursuit

Chelsea have been told Rice is not for sale (PA)

West Ham have told Chelsea that they will not sell Declan Rice for any price this summer, according to 90min.

The England international, who spent his formative years in the Blues’ academy, has been repeatedly linked with a return to his former club.

Chelsea are still believed to be keen on signing Rice, given his ability to operate as both a defender and midfielder.

But West Ham will reportedly refuse to sell the 21-year-old, even if Chelsea meet their asking price of £75m.

A bid could still be made before the close of the transfer window, but as it stands West Ham’s stance is clear.

Rennes want two Chelsea players in exchange for Mendy

Chelsea’s move for goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is being held up because Rennes want two players in a part-exchange deal, according to Football Insider.

The clubs have reportedly agreed terms on a £20m move for the Senegal international. But the delay in the completion of the transfer is because Rennes want at least one Chelsea player in exchange for Mendy.

Fikayo Tomori is a potential target for the Ligue 1 club, who have been linked with a loan move for the defender.

There was also talk of a potential return to France for striker Olivier Giroud, though it remains to be seen if Chelsea will entertain Rennes’ hopes of a part-exchange transfer.

Mendy is still expected to join Chelsea in the coming days as Lampard looks to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga.
