Chelsea transfer news: Mason Mount could leave Blues for RB Leipzig, admits Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard admits Mason Mount could join RB Leipzig this summer but has backed the Derby loanee to succeed at parent club Chelsea and England.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a fine season with the Rams in the Championship under the tutelage of the Blues great.

But with England’s youngsters demanding first team football at the highest level earlier than before, Mount may have a decision to make this summer.

“That’s his call,” Lampard admitted when asked whether Mount should follow the path of Jadon Sancho after his success with Borussia Dortmund since leaving Manchester City.

“It depends how Chelsea see it and how he sees it. It depends what is the best plan for him. What we can say is that the year he’s had – he’s had a great year which has put him one big step up the ladder.

“I think he can be a top player. I know that’s a broad statement, he’s already been in an England squad but I believe he’ll go back to Chelsea and be a big player for Chelsea. I know that’s his dream.

“He’ll play for his country I hope, because he has all the attributes on and off the pitch. He’s a delight to work with, as all the players have been this season.”

Mount, who has two years remaining on his contract, recently returned from injury to help the Rams thrash Rotherham 6-1, chipping in with a goal and an assist as they pursue a play-off place.

With seven goals and five assists in all competitions this term, Mount has taken a big step in his development, with his return from injury providing Lampard with a boost.

“It was hugely important (to have Mount back),” Lampard added. “There’s no doubt teams miss their top players because of what they give and he also rubs off on others.
