Chelsea team news: Edouard Mendy in line for debut against Tottenham in Carabao Cup

New Chelsea signing Edouard Mendy could make his debut for the club on Tuesday evening.

The Blues travel to north London to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, and Mendy has been named in Frank Lampard’s squad for the fourth-round tie.

Mendy, 28, arrived from Rennes last week but was not fit in time to be included in the Chelsea squad that travelled to West Brom. The hosts were 3-0 up at half-time, but the points were ultimately shared after the west London side completed a comeback in the 93rd minute.

Willy Caballero started in goal as the under-fire Kepa Arrizabalaga was benched following a series of poor performances, but Mendy is expected to be Kepa’s long-term replacement following his £22million move from Ligue 1.

Fellow new signing Ben Chilwell has also been named in Lampard’s squad for the Spurs tie, and could make just his second appearance for the Blues.

The left-back, who joined Chelsea from Leicester this summer, came off the bench in the last round of the competition and assisted an Olivier Giroud goal as the Premier League side thrashed Championship club Barnsley 6-0.

“Mendy and Chilwell are in the squad for tomorrow,” Lampard said on Monday.

“They’re fit and we will see whether they start or not.”

Chilwell is yet to feature in the Premier League, having struggled to stay fully healthy.
