Chelsea suffer Philippe Coutinho transfer setback

Chelsea have been tipped to make a move for Philippe Coutinho this summer.

The Brazilian playmaker has struggled for form and regular game time since making a £142million move from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018.

Coutinho has spent this season on loan with German giants Bayern Munich, but has not fared much better then than he had done at the Camp Nou.

Bayern do have the option of making the loan a permanent move this summer, but it looks increasingly unlikely that will happen, leaving Coutinho's future up in the air.

Alan Smith full Chelsea Q&A

Barcelona are reportedly keen to let him go, with Chelsea tipped to make a move, perhaps with a loan deal with an option to buy at the end of it.

Chelsea's interest appeared to stem from reports that Jadon Sancho was preferring a move to Manchester United, rather than Stamford Bridge.

However, United chief executive Ed Woodward has claimed United will not have as much money to spend this summer as they might have done because of the coronavirus pandemic that has called a halt to the Premier League.

That could end Chelsea's interest in Coutinho, as could the comments from Barcelona boss Quique Setien.

While the Barca heirarchy may be keen to get the Brtazilian midfielder off the wage bill, Setien appears keen to get him back to Catalunya to see what he can offer.

Speaking to RAC1, as quoted by Marca, Setien said: "He's a great player and I really like him."

Chelsea may have to think again.
