Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their pursuit to sign Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde, according to reports.
The 22-year-old is a target for the Blues before the transfer window shuts next week, and it looked like the west London club were close to securing a deal for his services.
However, according to a report from Sky Sports on Friday evening, a deal for the France international is now 'hanging in the balance'.
Chelsea have been close to agreeing a £43million deal for Kounde, but Sevilla are now said to be asking for closer to the Frenchman's £68.5m release clause.
The aforementioned report claims that any deal to sign Kounde depends on the Blues selling Kurt Zouma to West Ham United.
The Hammers have agreed a £25million fee, and personal terms, for the Chelsea defender, but the deal is yet to be completed.
Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has spoken out about Kounde's future and his possible move to Chelsea.
Lopetegui said: “The Sevilla coach must be prepared for all issues. These guys have their share of the market. What is going to happen I don’t know.
"If Jules leaves we are left with two centre-backs. If it happens, we have full confidence in Monchi.
"There is little time left, and nothing is simple. Our focus is 100% on the Elche game.”
Kounde is thought to be keen on leaving Seville before the transfer window closes after impressing last season for the Spanish club.
The France defender has established himself as one of the best defenders in La Liga, which has seen him linked with some of Europe's top clubs.
