Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku to resume running as he targets injury return after international break

Romelu Lukaku has provided a new update on his injury recovery as Chelsea’s club-record signing attempts to get closer to a return to action.

Lukaku has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury during the first half of Chelsea’s 4-0 Champions League win over Swedish outfit Malmo at Stamford Bridge on October 20, while fellow forward Timo Werner also sustained a hamstring problem in the same fixture.

Both players have missed each of the last four games across all competitions, while they won’t be available this weekend either as Thomas Tuchel’s early Premier League leaders - who haven’t exactly struggled for goals of late after hitting 10 in two matches against lowly Norwich and Newcastle - host struggling Burnley.

Tuchel is hoping to have both Lukaku and Werner back after the upcoming November international break, with high-profile fixtures against the likes of Leicester, Juventus and Manchester United to come.

And Lukaku provided a potentially encouraging update via his social media accounts on Friday, confirming that he was now resuming running.

Taking to Twitter, the £97.5million frontman said: “Running today let’s see how that goes.”

In addition to being absent for Chelsea, Lukaku will obviously play no part for Belgium over the next fortnight as Roberto Martinez’s side finish 2022 World Cup qualifying with matches against Estonia and Wales.

Chelsea are also without Mateo Kovacic at present due to a hamstring injury, while midfield colleague Mason Mount has sat out the last two games against Newcastle and Malmo due to an illness that is not Covid-related.
