Chelsea stat exposes problem Frank Lampard must address after underwhelming start to season

Individual errors are causing Frank Lampard headaches in what has been an under-par start to the season.

Chelsea's 3-3 draw with Southampton means they have picked up eight points from their first five games, a less than pleasing tally after a summer spend of more than £200million.

But the issue doesn't appear to be down to Frank Lampard's tactics or Chelsea's collective approach to their games.

According to the Premier League's official website, five of the nine goals conceded by Chelsea so far this season have been individual errors.

And three of those errors - one third of the goals conceded by Chelsea so far - have been committed by under-fire goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Lampard has already attempted to deal with the issue of Kepa's form, signing Edouard Mendy from Stade-Rennais.

But Mendy picked up an injury during the international break, leaving Kepa to deputise for the 3-3 draw with Southampton.

The Spaniard was criticised for a mistake that allowed a Southampton goal, missing the ball after a less than helpful sloppy backpass from Kurt Zouma.

The other two individual errors were committed by summer signings Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva respectively.

Havertz conceded possession to Danny Ings before his goal this weekend and Silva made a mistake during the draw with West Brom.

The errors will, no doubt, have Lampard pulling his hair out with Chelsea doing their job at the other end of the pitch, scoring 13 in their first five games.

But it's something he will have to find an answer to if the Blues are indeed going to challenge at the very top of the Premier League table this season.
