Chelsea stars set for World Cup semi-final as ex-Blue helps to fire Sweden past Germany

Sweden secured a major scalp in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in France, defying the odds to send Germany tumbling out of the tournament.

The Scandinavian side have a bitter rivalry with their German counterparts in women's football and were seen as the underdogs for the clash in Rennes, with the Netherlands lying in wait for the victors.

Lina Magull's goal after 16 minutes looked to have Germany heading to Lyon for the semi-finals but it didn't take long for former Chelsea ace Sofia Jakobsson to level the scores, which knocked the stuffing out of their opponents.

The two sides headed into the break level, with not much to separate them, but the game was decided just a few minutes after the restart as Stina Blackstenius fired the winning goal.

Chelsea defender Magdalena Eriksson played the entirety of the match and was kept on her toes by German starlet Lea Schuller and the rest of their attacking options.

Sweden and Eriksson had to do a lot of defending, with Germany having the lion's share of possession, with Hedvig Lindahl, who is a free agent after leaving the west London side prior to the tournament, had to make a number of saves.

Jonna Andersson, the other Chelsea ace in the Sweden squad, did not feature against Germany but has appeared in the World Cup so may be called upon in the semi-finals.

The Chelsea aces in the squad will come up against familiar faces against the Netherlands in Lyon on Wednesday, with former Blue Jackie Groenen, who has joined Manchester United ahead of the new season in the Women's Super League, lying in wait.

On top of that, a mini-London derby will be witnessed as the Netherlands squad also boasts Arsenal's Vivianne Miedema, Danielle van de Donk and new signing Jill Roord.

The Netherlands, winners of the European Championship in 2017, will be seen as favourites for the tournament but Sweden have shown so far this summer that they should not be overlooked.
