Chelsea star Willian claims 'majority' of players oppose plans to resume Premier League season

Chelsea winger Willian has become the latest player to speak out against plans to resume the Premier League season, insisting the "majority" are against the idea.

Under 'Project Restart', the Premier League is hoping to put together a plan that satisfies all parties about how to safely complete the 2019/20 season following the coronavirus pandemic.

Several proposals have been submitted, including using neutral venues to play out the remaining 92 fixtures, but clubs have been stern in their opposition to the idea.

It is believed the Premier League want matches will be played behind closed doors from June 19, but Willian has joined the likes of Sergio Aguero and Troy Deeney in voicing his opposition to the plans.

"Honestly, from what I can see, a lot of players – the majority, I’d say – are uncomfortable with the idea of returning right now," he said.

“We’re really keen to return, we really miss playing and doing what we love. But it needs to be safe for us to do so. That’s how we’re looking at it. Our health has to come first.

“So right now, players don’t feel comfortable with the idea of returning until it’s totally safe to do so.”

The Brazilian, who could end up leaving Chelsea before the end of the season if his contract is not extended, has revealed how Frank Lampard has kept players informed of the decisions being made.

“Our squad has spoken a lot over the internet, via different apps, and we’ve had some meetings too. Lampard has sent us information about what the Premier League wants to do," he added.

“We still don’t know how things are going to play out, moving forward. Hopefully, we’ll know in the next few days. The Premier League is going to have a meeting and then they’ll inform us about the next steps.”
