Chelsea star's Champions League performance suggests defensive future is secure

It might not have been in the Premier League, but Chelsea fans got their first glimpse of Malang Sarr last night.

The 21-year-old lined up for Porto in the Champions League against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

It was his debut for the Portuguese side having made the move on loan from the Blues in the summer.

Sarr joined Chelsea after being released on a free transfer when his contract ran out with Ligue 1 side Nice.

The intention was always to loan him back out for the campaign, and they sent him to Porto for the 2020/21 season.

It was a tough baptism of fire for the France U21s international, with the test of heading to City for a Champions League match.

Sarr started on the left of a back three, something which he could do if he was at Chelsea, with Frank Lampard having used a 3-4-3 at times last season.

And it was a solid display from Chelsea's new signing, who is expected to have a bright future for the Blues once he comes back into the fold.

Sarr won 100% of his ground duels in the games, with four interceptions and two clearances over the course of his 80 minutes on the pitch.

With 32 touches in the match, he had a passing accuracy of 86 per cent, and a long ball accuracy of 80 per cent.

Sarr had a battle with Riyad Mahrez throughout the match, something that Sarr came out on top with.

It wasn't a great night for his side in general, losing the match 3-1 in a poor start to their Champions League campaign.

But for Sarr it was a promising start to life with the club, and for Chelsea fans it was an encouraging sign that their defensive future could be secure.
