Chelsea star N'Golo Kante is 'very average' in advanced role, says Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher has branded Chelsea's N'Golo Kante a "very average player" when playing in his current position.

Since the arrival of Maurizio Sarri favourite Jorginho in the summer Kante, who was the anchor in back-to-back title wins with Leicester and Chelsea, has been pushed forward.

In a more advanced role in the midfield three, Kante has struggled to have the same impact on the game as he does from the base.

And after Tottenham cut through the Blues with ease in their 3-1 win at Wembley on Saturday, the former Liverpool defender said the shift in formation is impacting Kante's form.

"Well No1: Jorginho is not moving from that position. He's Sarri's man, he's built his team around him," Carragher said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

"Kante is not moving because he's signed a massive contract.

The one thing about Kante is he is a very average player in this [advanced] position he's playing now. I see a normal midfielder player.

"When he plays deeper, I see a world class midfield player."

In order to restore the Frenchman to that status, Carragher suggested a change of tact.

"What do you do? For me, I don't think this balance ever looks right," he added. "I think it's quite simple - whether or not Sarri is stuck on this 4-3-3 all the time.

"Play them as a midfield two and play Barkley, or Willian in front in more of a 4-2-3-1.

"It gets Kante back into his best position and it might relieve pressure on Jorginho.

"I don't think it's revolutionary."
