Chelsea star Ethan Ampadu explains why he has made the move to RB Leipzig

Ethan Ampadu has joined German side RB Leipzig on loan for the 2019/20 season.

The Wales international is highly-regarded at Stamford Bridge, but new head coach Frank Lampard is keen for him to get first team minutes under his belt.

Ampadu, who can operate at centre-back as well as defensive midfield, impressed Lampard in pre-season, but with a number of players ahead of him, has made the move to the Bundesliga for the season.

The German league has proven to be a good platform for Premier League youngsters with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Reiss Nelson and Reece Oxford all getting opportunities in the Bundesliga.

Furthermore, the Wales international is following in the footsteps of Arsenal youngster Emile Smith Rowe who spent the second half of last season at Leipzig and could soon be joined by Everton winger Ademola Lookman.

Smith Rowe even offered some words of advice to Ampadu upon signing for Leipzig.

He said: "Obviously it was frustrating not getting minutes but it was a great experience overall, living by myself and learning a new culture. I really enjoyed it.

"It matured me as a person, the whole environment."

And Ampadu has explained why he has made the move to Germany, during an official unveiling by the club.

He said: "I've heard a lot of good things about RB Leipzig, and know that young players are able to come here to continue their development. That's exactly what I want to do."

Lampard and the Chelsea supporters will be hoping he does just that.
