Chelsea star breaks silence on 'bewildering' contract situation amid interest from Barcelona

Chelsea centre-back Cesar Azpilicueta has spoken out on his contract situation, with his current deal still set to expire at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old will have been a part of the Blues squad for 10 years this summer having signed from Marseille in the summer of 2012, winning two Premier League titles and lifting the Champions League in that time.

But there are increasing concerns that this campaign could be his last.

As things stand, the Spaniard will become a free agent at the end of the season and is currently able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with sides outside the Premier League.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are both said to be interested, causing plenty of concern among Chelsea supporters that a defensive crisis could be on the horizon.

Eurosport reported in December that many in the Chelsea squad feel particularly 'bewildered' by the ongoing saga surrounding Azpilicueta's contract.

With Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen also both potentially leaving on free transfers at the end of the campaign, the Blues could be left incredibly short at the back, something that is of concern to the rest of the squad.

Thiago Silva was recently tied down to a one-year extension at Stamford Bridge, offering some security for Thomas Tuchel.

Now, Azpilicueta has had his say on his own contract situation in an interview with the club's official website, saying that he remains committed to the club.

"As I always said, I feel I have the trust and confidence of the club and now I am focused on every game," he said.

"They are very tough games, and I am enjoying the moment. Eventually the moment will come, but I am fully focused on hopefully getting as many trophies as we can and then we will see.

"I cannot say anything more than that I am really committed and have a lot of things ahead in the coming months and hopefully we can have a very good season."

Azpilicueta could play a key role in a busy month for the Blues, as they prepare to face Chesterfield in the FA Cup on Saturday before taking on Tottenham in parts two and three of a Premier League and Carabao Cup triple-header with former manager Antonio Conte's current side.

Tuchel's side also have tough away games at Manchester City and Brighton during the month of January.
