Chelsea star Billy Gilmour in nightmare Scotland return as ex Rangers youngster sees quick-fire red card

Billy Gilmour endured a nightmare return from injury after being shown a straight red card within ten minutes of coming off the bench for Scotland under-21s.

The Chelsea midfielder, who came through the youth ranks at Rangers, was given his marching orders for something he said to the referee.

Scotland came from behind against Croatia to draw the match 2-2 thanks to goals from Ibrox attacker Glen Middleton and Aberdeen's Connor McLennan.

However they had to see the final stages out with just ten men after ref Michael Fabri penalised Gilmour for dissent. The 19-year-old was frustrated after a foul went against him, and his frustrations clearly boiled over.

The midfielder broke into the Chelsea team towards the end of last season but was struck down by injury in July, and has been out of action for the last four months.

Recent reports suggest he could be set to leave Stamford Bridge on loan in January in a bid to build up his match sharpness again.

Scotland under-21s are in action against Greece next week as they continue their bid to qualify for a European Championships for the first time since 1996. They are currently top of Group D with 18 points from nine matches.
