Chelsea star among fastest players at Euro 2020 ahead of Sterling, Walker and Mbappe

Chelsea and Denmark star, Andreas Christensen, is surprisingly among the fastest players at the European Championships, at least if top recorded speeds are anything to go by.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic tournament so far, and has been an integral part of Denmark’s success, helping them to reach the semi-final for a Wembley showdown with England.

He is in that zone now. A player whose abundant promise, flagged since he arrived in West London from Brondby as a 16-year-old, has been hitherto met by numerous hurdles is coming of age before our eyes.

Defending aside, he has also been showing his capabilities as a ball-playing defender, and he even featured in Denmark’s midfield as the Danes smashed Wales 4-0 in the Round of 16.

Even though you’d never think of him as a slow player, it is astonishing to think of him as the seventh fastest player at the tournament, according to UEFA’s official website.

Italy’s Leanardo Spinazzola, who has incidentally been linked with a summer move to Chelsea, and Hungary’s Loic Nego tied at the top with recorded speeds of 33.8 km/h.

But at 33.3 km/h, Christensen is by no means slow.

Statistically, he is even faster than some of the most notoriously quick players in football, including Raheem Sterling (33.1 km/h), Kyle Walker (32.8 km/h) and France’s young star, Kylian Mbappe (32.2 km/h).

Now, in reality, players rarely hit their top speeds in game, especially when they’re as fast as the players mentioned above. So, it’s not to say that Christensen would beat Mbappe in a sprint, but still, the numbers are intriguing, particularly considering you would never associate Christensen as a quick footballer.

Although it’s nice to know a stat like that, the centre-back probably won’t be thinking about his newfound pace too much. Instead, he’ll be thinking about the task ahead, as the Danes shape up to try to shock England in their own backyard on Wednesday night.
