Chelsea squad make 'sizeable' donation to club Foundation to aid local coronavirus fight

The Chelsea squad have made a "sizeable" donation to the club's charitable foundation to aid the most vulnerable in the local are during the coronavirus pandemic.

Foundation staff have been helping local foodbanks deliver food parcels to those most in need in Surrey, Sussex and London while the club are in regular dialogue with councils over how they can help.

Earlier this month, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich offered the use of the Millenium Hotel, based at Stamford Bridge, to local NHS staff free of charge while manager Frank Lampard and Cesar Azpilicueta also donated to a separate fundraiser to support those on the frontline of the battle against Covid-19.

In a statement, Chelsea said: "With many people facing uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Foundation – through the generosity of the players – will work with a number of charities to support the most vulnerable within our community."

Club captain Azpilicueta added: "In these difficult times it is important we support those in need and together the players are proud to be able to do this through the Chelsea Foundation."
