Chelsea set new Romelu Lukaku price tag with Roma keen on permanent transfer

Chelsea hope to finally offload Romelu Lukaku next summer, with Roma keen to make his loan move permanent.

Lukaku is in sensational form, having scored nine times in 14 games in Italy this season and just hit four goals for Belgium against Azerbaijan on Sunday.

Despite that form, Chelsea remain keen to sell Lukaku as they consider a move to sign another striker either in January or next summer.

Chelsea have set a £37million price tag for the 30-year-old striker, which Roma are willing to pay if he continues his good form.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho would back a permanent move for Lukaku, but the Portuguese may leave the club this summer.

Mourinho was offered a £104m-a-year contract in Saudi Arabia last summer, with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

Antonio Conte is the early front runner to replace Mourinho at Roma and has a close bond with Lukaku from their time together at Inter, where Lukaku enjoyed the best run of his career which preceded his £100m transfer back to Chelsea in 2021.

Roma may need to qualify for Europe to complete a permanent deal but could also sell Tammy Abraham back to the Premier League should they need to raise funds.

Lukaku was signed as a replacement for Abraham, who remains out with a long-term knee injury and will not return until January at the earliest.

Juventus were interested in Lukaku this summer and could come back in to compete with Roma for his signature. AC Milan are also reportedly monitoring the situation.

Lukaku would need to forgo at least half of his £325,000-a-week wages to make a permanent move to Serie A.

He remains the highest-paid player on Chelsea’s books, with two-and-a-half years left on his contract.
