Lucy Bronze has challenged her Chelsea team-mates to go unbeaten domestically all season, after her second-half header earned the Blues a 1-0 win over Manchester United to seal a sixth successive Women’s Super League (WSL) title.
The Blues have enjoyed a seamless transition to life after legendary manager Emma Hayes, with Sonia Bompastor guiding them to the league title in her first campaign in charge.
Though Chelsea were thrashed 8-2 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-finals by holders Barcelona, they have not lost a domestic game all season, having beaten Manchester City in March to win the League Cup.
Chelsea’s nine-point lead over second-place Arsenal in the WSL is now unassailable and on Wednesday night they were named champions after winning at United.
They have league matches away to Tottenham and at home against Liverpool still to come, before their season ends on May 18 with a rematch against Manchester United in the FA Cup final, when yet more silverware will be on offer.
“The fortunate thing this season is we have been unbeaten, so we have always had the two things we are going for,” Bronze said.
“We knew before the game that Arsenal had got beaten [5-2 by Aston Villa], so we knew what we needed to do to win the title but we also want to go unbeaten.
“So although we have won the league, we want to win our final two games and go unbeaten this season.”
Bronze added: “We have had an up-and-down season, even if the results haven’t shown that.
“It is difficult to come in [as a new head coach]. We have had so many signings who are starting games and you are trying to develop something.
“We are not trying to take away from the legacy Chelsea has always had, [but] I think next season we can push on and improve a lot more.
“We have not been at our best during the second half of the season. Sonia has done well so far, but I think she wants a lot more and I think we can give it.”
