Former Arsenal and Germany striker Lukas Podolski has admitted that Kai Havertz is still lacking two key attributes to quickly make a name for himself in the Premier League, as Chelsea continue to try and conclude a summer transfer for the midfielder.
The Bayer Leverkusen starlet, who was one of Europe's best-performing youngsters during the 2019/20 campaign, notching 18 goals and registering nine assists, has been closely linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent months, with Blues head coach Frank Lampard keen to secure his services.
football.london understands that Chelsea remain optimistic about getting a deal over the line for the attacking-midfielder, who can also operate as a striker if required, but the transfer fee remains a sticking point.
Leverkusen and Chelsea are yet to agree on a transfer fee, despite Havertz having made it clear that he wants to seal a move to West London this summer.
Should Chelsea be successful in their efforts to land the 21-year-old, they would be inheriting one of the most skilful and exciting youngsters in football. However, Podolski, who spent three years at Arsenal between 2012 and 2015, believes Havertz still lacks the strength and power required to make the grade in English football.
"He’s a great talent," said Podolski, as quoted by The Sun. "On the ball he is so creative, but he’s still young — let’s see if he can fit into the Premier League.
"I think he is still missing some strength and power, but he should taste the drink of the Premier League and see if he likes it.
"I did, but I knew I would like it. I’m strong, I have a good shot, I’m from the street, I’m like a pitbull.
"I knew I could deal with the Premier League with the long balls, the physical side and the referees."
Though Podolski holds some concerns about Havertz hitting the ground running in the Premier League, should a deal get over the line this summer, he is confident that Timo Werner, who sealed a move to Stamford Bridge back in June, will "fit in" at Chelsea.
"When you score 28 goals in the Bundesliga, you are a good player," Podolski told The Athletic.
"He’s quick, has a good shot, runs a lot and will fit in with this Chelsea team with its young players and coach, if they can accommodate him."
Werner has already started training with his new Chelsea teammates at the Blues' Cobham training base ahead of the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season next month, meaning he will be familiar with his new surroundings and teammates by the time the season gets underway.
