Chelsea sent Erling Haaland transfer message after defeat to Arsenal

Former England midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has suggested Chelsea must look for a new striker to guarantee goals after Kai Havertz's lacklustre display in their home defeat to Arsenal.

The Gunners grabbed a fluke goal in the 16th minute as Emile Smith-Rowe latched onto a sloppy error from Jorginho. Chelsea then dominated the remainder of the proceedings but struggled to break down Arsenal's robust defence.

With half an hour to go Olivier Giroud came on against his old side, replacing Havertz, who failed to establish himself playing in the false nine position.

It extended a recent trend of Chelsea forwards misfiring in front of goal with summer signing Timo Werner, in particular, failing to recapture the scintillating form he showed throughout his time in the Bundesliga.

Chelsea continue to be linked to Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland and Redknapp reckons the Blues should attempt to lure him to Stamford Bridge this summer.

“Werner has done okay, he’s had assists and a few goals. But you think, with this team, if they were to get Haaland or a striker that could guarantee goals, and what they could become," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

"This has probably been their problem at times, scoring enough goals, they’ve got so much threat going forward but they just need that striker at times to make that difference.”

Securing Champions League football next season will be vital for Chelsea's pursuit of Haaland or any other top targets.

The Champions League finalists sit fourth in the Premier League and will have to stave off attempts from both West Ham and Liverpool if they are to play in Europe's elite competition come September - or win the Champions League final against Manchester City on May 29.
